Reading Start Season Home Against Peterborough
22 June 2023
By Hob Nob Anyone?
Reading's fixtures for the new 2023/2024 League One campaign have been released, and the Royals will kick-off the new season at home against Peterborough on Saturday 5 August. The new fixture list really does hammer home Reading's relegation with August seeing the Royals also play Port Vale (away), Cheltenham (home), Stevenage (home) and Exeter City (away).
Boxing Day sees the return trip to Peterborough and New Years Day the Royals will play at home to Exeter City.
Reading will of course get to play Oxford United again in League football this season. Oxford visit The Select Car Leasing Stadium on Saturday 14 October. Our trip to the Kassam Stadium, which is sure to be a sell out, is on Saturday 3 February.
Reading finish the 2023/2024 season with a home match against Blackpool on Saturday 27 April. Who knows where Reading will find themselves in the League One table at that stage of the season?

Christmas and Easter fixtures were always local derbies to attract fans that would be at home and go to a game (also because of usual travel restriction over those periods) a Boxing day fixture at Peterborough with no public transport (then again who uses it these days  ) when Oxford is just down the road plus Bolton away on Easter Monday, when Wycombe are just down the road seems crazy to me
I haven't seen all the fixtures yet but obviously it depends who other teams play on that day. I do think they try and arrange as many fixtures as possible to be fairly close on those days due to travel arrangements. We may just have been one of the unlucky ones who got a long away journey, but Peterborough isn't a bad journey from Reading on Boxing Day. Not sure what the rest of the fixtures look like on those dates though.

Can't ever see that changing and for someone who doesn't live in the RG postcode anymore, I'm quite glad for the little bit of extra time to get to games after work!
yeah this. Where do you park?
Usually just park at Mereoak and walk from there, easiest to shoot off from there back towards M3.
Yourself?

round the back of GP - how long does the walk from Meereoak take?
About 25-30 mins usually, but then I am straight out onto the A33 heading back towards M3 and I don't have to navigate the M4 roundabout.

ooh is that quicker to the M3 than via the M4? What route is that southbound A33...
Yeah, I usually find it is quicker to M3, go the back way through Bramshill, past Eversley, Blackbushe Airport and out onto the M3 at Junction 4a. Usually go that way as well.
The only time I would probably go back via M4 if it's an evening game and I can't be arsed to navigate and just want the simplest drive possible!

Well I thought it may have been something different to that, considering every club is impacted by traffic and travelling to a ground that is what a couple of miles off the motorway isn't the toughest of places to get to, especially when the M4 isn't the worst of motorways in the country either.
But if it's traffic then fair enough, just surprised we are one of the few clubs who kick off at 8 for that reason.

It isn't really to do with the M4 traffic, it is more to do with the traffic coming from town direction.

It was supposed to do with the "double rush hour" effect caused by everyone piling out of London and getting back to Ding about that time I believe when it was first brought in. It's handy for me and my Dad coming down from the Midlands though certainly.

Those are my thoughts, not sure why we are so accommodating when much bigger clubs are not. Might have something to do with being on the way in and out of London?

It's not the biggest of towns in the UK though is it really?
As mentioned elsewhere, not sure why we are so accommodating and other clubs aren't really, Reading is hardly the most difficult of places to get to and it's a good 40 miles outside of the M4 traffic from London as well. Anyway, if it gives that extra 30 minutes for home supporters, then I guess it's a bonus (not that our midweek record has been fantastic in recent years).

Size? No, probably not. Size of workforce in and around town? Much bigger.
I feel like this is a post of someone who hasn't been on the IDR between the hours of 5:30 - 7:00 recently.
When I was living in central London and getting the train to evening games, there were multiple times that I nearly missed the kick-off due to the bus simply not being able to get through traffic.

We'll have a fairly high percentage of supporters living outside the town (in places like Bracknell, Maidenhead, Newbury, Basingstoke, Didcot, etc.) which will have an impact on this.
I don't know if we have an abnormally large percentage of our support from outside the primary urban area of the team however.

Yeah it is, ultimately I don't know I don't really go through the town. Obviously people more local to the area would be able to explain, I've just never heard somebody say that Reading is one of the tougher places to get to/through in the UK, that's usually reserved for anywhere inside the M25, going down the M6 (or across the M62) or getting to Norwich.
