MATCHWATCH : Luton Town (h)

by Sutekh » 15 Dec 2025 09:56

When : Thursday December 18, 2025, 8pm
Where : SCL Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

Next up another god awful Thursday night “for the telly” affair that everyone hates (except for all your better halves as it means you can spend the last weekend before Christmas doing the important Christmas shopping stuff with them  - thanks Sky).

So are we all ready for an evening giving out early Christmas presents then, as that’s probably what we’ll get based on the last couple of performances.

Not that you’d think Luton would need any help being, as they currently are, a side just 3 points adrift of the play offs but then form hasn’t exactly been award winning for the Kenilworth Mob in recent years. Two years ago they were enjoying the absurdities of VAR for a short season, then last year they were rinsed and flushed straight round the Championship U-bend and into the third level sewer where Jack Wilshere’s  boys seem to very slowly be finding their level.

Of the last 8 league games Luton have won 2 and drawn 5 so another difficult to beat outfit that’ll probably frustrate everyone on the night. However their last league away trip was a 5-0 stuffing at Oakwell so when they do collapse it seems to be spectacular. Since then they’ve had one further away trip to draw 2-2 and lose on penalties to Fleetwood in the FA Cup, followed by a 2-2 draw at home to bottom of the table Port Vale last Saturday.

Midfield is where they excel with nearly all the scoring threat emanating from that area, in particular from the likes of Gideon Kodua and Jordan Clark in addition their higher profile players of George Saville and Jerry Yates are not ones to forget about either.

Luton, like Reading, have one player, who more than likely would not have played anyway, absent due to AFCON duty for Zimbabwe, with Marvelous Nakamba joining Andy Rinomhota for their Moroccan adventure next month. Reading also have a string of injuries, or perhaps they don’t, we won’t know for sure until the day unless LR suddenly decides to blurt something out for some unfathomable reason after telling everyone he doesn’t talk about injured players. Meanwhile the Hatters have 3 injury doubts; Alfie Doughty, Elijah Adebayo and Jacob Brown.

Referee

Ed Duckworth Lewis Method

Previously

11 Mar 25 > Reading 2-0 Wrexham
19 Oct 24 > Reading 4-1 Crawley Town

Historically

It’s been pretty even overall between the two clubs down the years, the last league meeting was the “Carrollgate” 1-1 draw in Reading back in April 2023. Otherwise Reading have won 16 and lost 6 of their 26 home league games against Luton

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel to the game
  2. SKY//SkyGo or Now app
  3. Listen to a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  4. Ring/text a mate for updates
  5. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  6. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Might’ve treated myself to a nice pre-Christmas drink if it was on the Saturday… but no, Sky had other ideas. (Absolute cockwombles)
Learnt my lesson at Peterborough ,won’t be falling for that one again anytime soon.

As Mariah Carey so famously put it: “All I want for Christmas is hoof.”!

Can’t really be arsed either but I may go. Might just watch it on tv though

Dunno what I’d do for the team. 3 CBs does possibly sound better but I quite liked what LR was doing against Stevenage and Carlisle (before the meltdown)

Maybe
JP
Abrefa Paudie Williams Dorsett
Wing savage/Fraser
DK Doyle Kelvin
Marriott

Wouldn’t be against dropping DK from that and playing Garcia as LWB though in a 3-4-2-1

Something like:

The usual
..........................Pereira
...Abrefa, O,Connor, Williams, Dorsett
.....................Wing.....Savage
Williams........Kyerewaa.......Ehibhatiomhan
.......................Marriott

But Doyle may deserve one more chance.

Or something more revolutionary like
...........................Pereira
........Williams, O'Connor, Dorsett
Abrefa.......Wing.......Savage.....Williams
......................Kyerewaa
..............Marriott, Ehibhatiomhan

I know you have suggested Danny K in that role before but I feel he wouldn't have the discipline required and is most effective out wide.
The manager really doesn't have too many options does he?

He was playing there a fair amount against Bradford, with Doyle often wide right and Williams wide left.

I wouldn’t say he's less disciplined than Doyle or Kelvin E who've both been used there.

Agreed-neither of them are any good there either.

At least playing wing backs would give us natural width. Don’t think Pep has used used inverted wing backs yet, so it should be acceptable. A back three of Williams, O’Connor and Abrefa would work. You have to have some pace at the back.

22nd November. Not got another scheduled until the 24th January.

He has loads of options. Just not many good ones.

I know MoM just hasn’t worked out but would like to see him on the bench. Seems to be a bit odd not to have him there at all

I'd assumed MoM was injured, along with Lane & Elliott....I know Richardson gives out injury news sparingly but surely the journalists whoever they are now can ask if they are injured or not selected?

I mean, not much point if he's not here beyond the end of the month, and why would he, us or his club want him here. Much rather see Patton or Evans huff around doing nothing than O'Mahoney waste our time.

Well yeah I wouldn’t mind that either but they’ve not been on the bench as well.

Saw they both played in the last u21 game.

I'm fairly certain all three are injured, but that's just my assumption they'd be in the squad if they were fit. Although the last we saw of Lane was him going off injured (Carlisle?).

STAR newsletter this week

We have the Christmas game this week, I have already heard a lot of fans saying that they won't be attending. Please reconsider, the club have put a lot of effort into making the evening as fun as it can be. We know that Santa and his reindeer will be in the Fun Zone where he’ll be handing out gifts; Maidenhead Salvation Army will be performing outside the Fan store pre match and pitch side at half time. There is an enhanced Fun Zone offering and Festive hospitality offering. So it's worth coming along, come and see your mates at the game, have a drink and make the most of it.

Have a drink? Sorry STAR, I've got at least an hour and quarter drive home afterwards if I decide to go.
