genome Yeah, seen a lot of people say that England were dominated. I feel like I watched a different match to them.

I believe the unit of measurement for supporting England is 'of hurts'
This is true, but surely there must have been a honeymoon glory period after winning the World Cup where there was no hurt, only joy and celebration
I assume there was no time for reflecting in glory back then as they were straight back down the pit, into the working mens clubs and home to mercilessly beat their wives.

ScutterbucketzWinston BiscuitLUX I am delighted about last night, but 50 years or thereabouts of supporting England

Opinion is divided, but 1970 World Cup seems to have been where the hurting began, so by that calculation we are now into the 51st year of hurt, or 51AM (Anno Malum).

Not really; the first game West Ham played in the 66/67 season, they introduced their 3 World Cup winners, and that was it.
England lost to Scotland in the 1967 Home International at Wembley, and then lost to Yugoslavia in the Semi Final of the 1968 Euro's (a very different competition then, but even so......) with Alan Mullary getting sent off in that game to be the first time ever an England player had been sent off. So, the shine went pretty quickly.
Plus it was a different time; it simply wasn't as hyped as it is today.
That having been said, the England '70 team were really good; they held Brazil in the Group game, and were the only team that played well against them. Bank's illness and the substitutions were key to the loss against West Germany in the QF's; I remember watching it at the time and just being shocked that we could have lost that game..............

Did Jairzinho’s goal against England not count ?
Don’t tell me, it was a late VAR call

Yeah - my bad; I meant that Brazil didn't wipe the floor with us as they did most other teams in 1970.......

Certainly agree about how good England were in 70 with the core from 66 plus the likes of Mullery, Labone and Newton although they were actually beaten by Brazil in the group stages 1-0. An iconic game with Moore’s tackle, Banks save and Pele and Bobby exchanging shorts at the end.

Little wonder it was so iconic. I have driven 430 miles today and am knackered...well that’s my excuse.

Funny how one reasonably innocent quote can make me laugh so much.
Mrs F thinks I’ve lost it (and she may be right)
