West F Saying that we lost the game in the first five minutes is worrying. We are at home and there is a whole ninety minutes left to turn it around. Playing with inverted wingers results in an inability to stretch teams out wide. When we are facing a team who have the lead, we cannot compress the pitch because our centre backs cannot deal with pace and have to sit too deep.
The manager promised ‘direct’ football, which is what we were doing constantly from both the keeper and the centre backs. The only time this changed was when Wing or Savage collected the ball deep and launched it. It is percentage based play. Do this thirty times in a match and you could create chances based on a defensive mistake or some lucky bounce. .

Apparently we launched 70 long balls during yesterday's game with 53 being inaccurate! So it would seem a complete waste of time and potential points adopting that percentage based play!

It is also horrendous to watch.

Hound I do find the conclusion that this dreadful performance means Hunt should have stayed/wasn’t to blame an odd take. He basically signed half of this side and we’re trying to recover from the mess he left

Still can’t get my head round how bad we were, esp second half. But also just exactly what LR was expecting to happen with those players on the pitch.

Agree Wing was a big problem last night. He was woeful.

We can certainly blame Hunt for the recruitment but you can't blame him for the hoofball that was on show last night. Players do tend to revert to it when things are going wrong but it was clear from the start that it was a tactic.
It was obvious JP was uncomfortable launching it, he much prefers to throw the ball out.
If LR wants to implement this draconian style of football he will have to sign a lot of new players next month.

Well if I were Rob Couhig I wouldn't bank on increased ticket revenue if that's the style of football Richardson is going to end up dishing up. Yes, we've probably been spoilt by the football from the good old days but that's the style of play I enjoy watching and will pay to see. If we're going to just hoof it forward to big lumps up front, I can watch that for free in the local parks!

leon Watched the Sky "highlights" and O'Connor just ambled around the pitch looking like he didn't give a shit. I know he isn't the most mobile but really?

He’s up there with the slowest players I’ve ever seen

I can take one of the CBs being slow, but I assumed given the plaudits he gained at Lincoln, he must have something else about him. But he seems really quiet, slightly suspect at positioning, not that commanding in the air and utterly atrocious at passing.

We had the farcical sight last night of Wing playing even deeper than normal, laying the ball back to Paudie to lump it forward. To no-one. TBF he wasn't the only one, lost count of the number of apologetic arm raises from players after another misdirected pass.

Really need to see some changes and a positive reaction at Bradford.

Which does make you question why he breaks the defensive line so often and charges forward to try to challenge.

Thought he'd been pretty positionally disciplined since returning to the team, but he was absolutely all over the shop last night, and certainly not in a good way.

Any time I think about football, the key thing I come back to is it's simply about building partnerships across the pitch and through the team.

CB with CB
CB with FB
FB with Wing
Wing with FW
FW with FW/AM
CM with CM
CM with every other position.

And our entire team seems to play the game in isolation as if they've never met, let alone trained together.

You have to give the opposition some credit; we did try to play out and build but the long balls were often the result of effective pressing.

But given Peterborough played the same way with success against Stockport on sky the other week you wonder what prep went into the game....something we all moaned about Hunt for.

He had 62 according to whoscored. Less than JP which says a lot though

My apologies, I googled it and that was the answer google AI gave me. After further research it was WiFi that had 17 touches :| thanks google.. Never thought wing and WiFi could be mixed up but here we are.

tidus_mi2 This sort of performance is exactly why we'll never mount a serious charge towards the play-offs, for every good performance like Blackpool, there's a Doncaster or a Peterborough.

Unless we have a great January window, I think we'll see more of the same for the rest of the season and finish lower mid-table.

Which I can live with if we build on it. If we have a mix of good performances and piss poor ones, then the objective over the summer is pretty obvious; bring in the right players who can help us bring in the consistency. We just have to be patient and accept it's the start of a long rebuild.

Football fans generally don't have the patience these days. All instant gratification. Fantasy football recruitment. Whereas in real life it's about real people. Who bring with them all their personal baggage. No guarantee any signing will settle into the team long term.

Depends, I’d be very patient in allowing the new manager time to rebuild if I thought he was the right man for the job. I’m going on record now and saying leam isn’t the right man. And I go as far to say I don’t like him at all. I don’t like the way he conducts himself in interviews - I think he’s aggressive and prickly with his answers. I don’t like what he’s trying to with the playing style . I don’t think he’s got a good enough CV. And I think we will go backwards under his stewardship. I don’t see him lasting to end of the season.

At Lincoln O'Connor played in a different system with five across the back, which makes up for his lack of pace.
although you could argue with Wing playing so far back that's what he has here.

I'm happy to be patient and allow time for a rebuild, just so long as that rebuild isn't based on foundations of 'hoofball'.

if you're going to play long ball then it might be good to actually have some big lumps up front to hoof it towards.

Yeah I’ve no major issue with a long ball game tbh. It can actually be quite entertaining. Any style played badly is crap to watch

But you have to have the players for it, and we clearly don’t
