MATCHWATCH : AFC Wimbledon (h)

by Sutekh » 24 Aug 2025 10:44

When : Tuesday August 26, 7pm
Where : SCL Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

Ten days after a miserable strugle at home against a Wimbledon side that are actually quite useful, and certainly won't be fulfilling the favourites for relegation mantra, comes another shot at breaking the run of what is now five defeats in a row at home (incl. PSFs) as the Wombles return for a League Cup tie.

However while things at least appear to be going in the right direction for Reading on the pitch, there's likely to be a break in proceedings as both teams will probably field different XIs from those of a couple of Saturdays ago, let's hope Reading turn up with a Wycombe attitude and a bout of unforgiving revenge on the mind though.

Referee

Jacob Miles

Previously

Nothing

Historically

“Recent” home form against Wimbledon is complete and utter shite. Of the last three games played in Reading (all in the league) Reading have won zero, drawn zero and clocked up just one goal. Meanwhile the performances, certainly for the last two, were poor

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and go
  2. NOW app/Red button
  3. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  4. Ring/text a mate for updates
  5. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  6. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Given the three games in 8 days and the number of injuries, I assume we'd all agree a rotation is in order here? Cup run would be lovely, but we need to get motoring a bit in the league and protect the squad for that.

Patrick Bauer has signed for Wimbledon. Presuming he knows their manager (Johnnie Jackson) well from time at Charlton. Shame, could have been a good fit at Reading.

Someone mistook it for an EFL Trophy game?

Would be nice to keep progressing in these winnable games to have more opportunities to keep the squad rotation going and keep everyone fresh.

So, no idea what team either side will put out.

Agree it’s ludicrous and will kill the attendance. Whereas no-one cares about Trophy games very much, so it doesn’t really matter, the League Cup being belittled in the same way is stupid even if it has become a minor competition now. 7.45pm is fine if they want earlier kick offs.

Wonder if it’s a test and we’ll start seeing the same for league games if a large(ish) crowd does manage to make it. Or perhaps it is the new evening ko time for all Reading home games :o

Agreed. We can hopefully find a way to give Marco a rest as well. Maybe Noel can get his boots out.

Big fan of the club choosing to kick this off at 7pm. Straight to penalties as well if tied at 90 minutes so will be home at a reasonable time.

No one cares about trophy games yet we manage to sell out at Swindon

My theory is that it’s school holidays. I think it’s an attempt to allow kids to go to the game without it getting too late, although that would be impacted by reduced numbers able to get back from work in time for kick-off.

Agree we’ll rotate. Have we got any U21 strikers available to give O’Mahony a rest? That said, this game is probably a good opportunity for him to get his first goal.

Okine Peters. But really not seen a lot from him. I’d prob bench MoM but it’s a tough one to call

If both sides make significant changes we will win as we do in similar trophy games. Our U21's are better than anyone else's in the lower leagues.

Because they’re a local derby we've barely played in decades. You've only got to look at our regular trophy attendances, or that of any other club, to see no one cares.

I`m wondering if their number 3 Steve Seddon has recovered from the horrific head injury from last week to take part tomorrow?

The sports science psychology team will evaluate on the day. Hopefully the return to the scene of the incident can be part of his healing process as he looks to rebuild his career.

He may need to see a trigger warning first though.
