It's simple, we have lost some very good players and the replacements have not been up to it.

It's early days but with one or two exceptions our recruitment looks haphazard, scatter-gunned and inadequate. There seems to be no over-arching plan as we desperately take whatever punt an agent puts in front of us.

We are not cohesive, we are simply trying to get deals done and hoping the player will fit in our team. There is no strategy. We just for what players are available rather than what players suit our existing squad or style of play.

In a word, we are a rabble. We probably don't have one defender who is better than average on the ball.

Last season we had a Championship CB pairing. We can't expect to sign a Championship CB pairing in L1.

Not to mention our first choice CB and marquee signing is yet to play a minute ot League football for us.

I’ve said similar in terms of the criticisms of our forwards. What goal are you expecting them to score? A header, one or one, pull back etc? I’ve no idea

The two Portsmouth goals were through balls of sorts that Kelvin ran onto. I haven’t seen a lot of us trying to get in behind in the league games. Maybe the defending has just been better than Portsmouths poor efforts

I thought Selles was very slow to learn in 2023-24. He used the ridiculous 4-2-2-2 formation and stuck with it too long and fans were almost unanimously calling for his head after we led 2-0 at Shrewsbury before capitulating 2-3. Hunt on the other hand has had a much stronger start as manager. It was great that Selles learned from his errors and came good, but he was incredibly fortunate that he was not sacked. Fans have short memories.

I think that trying to get up the pitch with Smith’s workrate and hold up play to provide a setup for midfield runners. Elliot carrying the ball forward to commit defenders and create space for Smith to exploit. Inverted forwards in Azeez and Kelvin who could cut inside to get a shot away. Long throws and set pieces that attempt to find Bindon, to get headers on target or knock downs that cleaners like Knibbs or Smith would tidy away. None of these are chaos on counter, but are things that I felt I saw and identified as an intent. The only thing I can see at the moment that is effective is Wing stepping on to balls on the edge of the box before you hear that familiar BaBoom sound, which is frequently followed by the sound of disturbed rigging and gasps.

I think you're confusing failure to execute a plan well, with no plan.

What you've described is basically the same.as Hunt's approach. It's just O'Mahoney, Garcia, Fraser, Camara etc are less good than Smith, Knibbs/Elliott, Azeez/Campbell at it.

Who is responsible for recruitment now? - Are they the same ones who got us Wing, Knibbs, Savage, Bindon etc? Have the goalposts moved, Are they working to a lower transfer and salary budget or something?

I think we should back the manager, we're only 9 points off the top of the table.... sure this run can't continue and whilst we do desperately need a striker/goal scorer we need to get the team defensively sound as a priority. We won't keep a clean sheet every game, but let's make sure we don't concede any sloppy goals.
