Winston Biscuit I wonder how much of a 10 year contract it really is. I can't imagine the player or club would want that contract unless there were ways out of it for either side

Given the earlier court ruling this season it means naff all as Haaland can walk out any time he wants so long as he gives notice.

checked up on that the other day to see how its coming on and apparently its still waiting for FIFA to approve some kind of change to their ruling so they cover it. Going to be quite interesting to see what happens when it comes in, if FIFA's new rule to incorporate it doesn't do enough there will just be another legal case challenging it, but from what has been said the players should just be able to hand in their 30 days notice and leave.

must be some players just itching to be the first to do it and get the headline

The "interesting" aspect will be if a player is say left out of a Champions League squad in early September and then resigns - under current rules he could be employed by but not play for another club until January 1st. I can see a restraint of trade case happening there right away.

If a player has a right to resign at any time, then he must surely have the right to move to another employer and play at any time too - if so, the transfer window becomes a thing of the past.

Ooh yeah, being cup tied would be a thing of the past I suppose

Maybe the court case means that technically you could play for around 7-8 clubs in the same season (handing in your notice on day 1 at each club), and in the same competition

there is more than a month between FA Cup semi final and final. I wonder if the new rule will see someone play for one victorious semi finalist, hand in their notice after the game, then pop up in the final for another team

Players (& even management) contracts should be honoured by both parties for their entirety. If a player or manager wants to quit or a club wants to dump someone then that’s fine but, as with the real world, a suitable notice period should be agreed as part of the contract and therefore suitable compensation set in stone.

Of course this highlights the restrictive practice nature of transfer windows which really should be completely done away with.

Really don’t see why the “cup tied” rule exists, so what if a player moves clubs and is therefore lucky enough to able to get another crack in a cup competition that they may have played in earlier in the season - they can play in the same league and even division for another club so why not a cup?

Equally what does it matter if a player moves 3 or 4 times in a season why should they be restricted to just 2 clubs?

The simple answer is for the notice period to be a minimum of 3 months, which it is for most employees who are considered to be key - higher up the food chain in business it can be 6 months or more.

Haaland's new contract apparently has the old release clause removed and a new one put in that can't be activated for the first 5 years of it

Having sat through one, a 6 month notice period is some hilarious bullshit.

Clubs would put into place gardening leave and no competitor clauses.

Lawyers would get richer.

You’d have to either have an agreed non-negotiable notice period in every agreement or just say that each period of notice would be agreed between both parties in the event one party wanted to quit. If someone just walks away then the required 1, 2 or 3 months notice would become the proverbial “gardening leave”. The proposed regulator would have to be accepted as the final word in disagreements. But whatever, it’ll be megabunce time for sporting lawyers.

Well that should help Haaland stay humble.

Not a particularly bright performance at Orient plus mega bucks new midfielder is off injured after 20 minutes or so. They’ll still wangle their way through though given the emergency safety options on their bench.

Credit to Wellens and Orient for getting themselves organised and actually making a game of it though.
