Not by choice.

He was sold by necessity to pay off a debt (an illegal one, as it turned out).

Federici refused to move or co-operate and refused to be anything other than number one 'keeper, and no other club wanted to pay any money for him, so selling McCarthy was, sadly, the better option for the club.
