When Hicks went up...
From Despair To Where?
McIntyre and ?

I was thinking Howie but he got dropped for Van Der Kwaak.

Yeh Howie was the other but I could have said 6. Not the best keeper but did a job for us for a few years.

And of course Brayson is the correct answer to who is our worst ever signing.

Nah Oillie Kearns was dreadful, may have scored a few but missed far more chances, the Goat likewise.

Harsh - agree he had limited ability and always looked like he'd trip over the ball but his scoring record was nearly 1 in 2 over about 100 games for us....

reminder of the 'magnificent' 'seven'

Back: Stuart Gray, Scott Howie, Jim McIntyre.
Front: Robert Fleck, Paul Brayson, Jimmy Crawford.
Missing: Patrick Kelly.

They look like they've won a competition.

Iirc that's how Kelly looked on the pitch.

Three strikers who couldn’t score, two midfielders who couldn't pass or dribble and Howie and Gray.

Paul Brayson, the only striker I ever saw where no one got excited when he rounded the keeper in a 1v1 because you knew he'd still miss the open net.

To be fair Brayson is a top class non league player but struggled badly at league level, that said you couldn't fault his effort, though paying £100k for him was a bit much even then.

Surely Aluko has to be the worst - incredibly expensive and not very good.

Then there's Emerse Fae and about 60% of the signings made by Tommy Burns.

Ratio between cost and return, yes, definetly.

Vydra has to be worth a mention for what was, at the time, a ridiculous 2.5m loan fee for oxf*rd all.

He was our record signing at the time wasn't he ... hardly played.

Daniel Carrico for me would be the winner of the least recognised good signing ... how he went onto captain Sevilla after us and being judged not good enough for a relegated team still baffles me.

Greg Halford.

We have a winner. Wins by 1 1/2 lengths ahead of another, at the time record signing, Steve Moran.

Surely he won it by a nose...

Subtle.
I am with Aluko being the worst because of the cost which then had a longer term effect on the club's finances.

I'm not sure he was considered not good enough - I think he simply never settled in England. It didn't help he'd only played about six minutes of football in the nine months before signing for us and had to learn the language to communicate with staff and players. In the brief cameos we did see of him, he looked like he'd be a quality player (not including his first game for us when he clearly nowhere near fit enough to be playing).

I’d suggest Les Ferdinand and Martin Keown as being particularly poor. Proper dead wood.

kirkrich Drenthe anyone?

His career trajectory is interesting:

  • 2005-07 - Feyenoord
  • 2007-12 - Real Madrid
  • 2010-11 - Hercules (loan)
  • 2011-12 - Everton (loan)
  • 2012-13 - Alania Vladikavkaz (Russia)
  • 2013-15 - Reading
  • 2014-15 - Sheff Wed (loan)
  • 2015 - Kayseri Erciyesspor (Turkey)
  • 2015-16 - Baniyas (UAE)
  • 2016-18 - Became a rapper (Roya2Faces)
  • 2018-19 - Sparta Rotterdam (Dutch 2nd tier)
  • 2019-21 - Kozakken Boys (Dutch 3rd tier)
  • 2021-22 - Racing Murcia (Spanish 4th/5th tier)
  • 2022 - Real Murcia (loan - Spanish 4th tier)
  • 2022 - Racing Mérida City (Spanish 6th tier or lower)
  • 2023 - Kozakken Boys (Dutch 3rd tier)

I heard he showed up at his first training session with us with a 'number of women' :? . Didn't he also knock out Jobi McAnuff during a fight between him and Alex Pearce?

Carroll's not even close.

As to the worst ever signing, surely this has been done to death?

Sean Evers. That is all.
