Scottish season got underway last night with the first group games of the League Cup with Falkirk beating Hibernian being the stand out result.

genuinely don't think I have ever heard so much hype around a pre season friendly as Man Utd's a few days ago. Not even a game, just a half. its quite mental

Kenedy started for Chelsea in their pre season friendly last week.

7 years after joining the club and spending nearly all that time being loaned out. Had no idea he was still a Chelsea player

U12s and under - no heading - how utterly ridiculous. This age group has been brought up with heading and mastering it last few years. A year when they move to competitive football.

Why could the FA just not bring it in permanently for U7s and U8s now and let them grow with the idea of no heading. Heading then starts when they reach the age of U12's.

Yet again, a good idea in principle gets utterly muddled.

Presumably to minimise the brain damage it might cause them?

Afterall, that's the reason it's being introduced right, safety?

I'm not sure 'they've already been doing it for years so we might as well let them carry on even though our studies show its a problem' really washes.

He joined Chelsea in 2015 for about £6.5m and his current deal runs until June 2023. He's now 26 years old and played a whopping total of 16 league games for Chelsea, plus another 14 games in all competitions, in 7 years. Since the start of 2016/17 he's made 10 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea and around 130 in all competitions on loan at 5 clubs (Watford, Newcastle, Getafe, Granada, Flamengo). Highlight for him though was obviously the rumour he'd join Reading on loan in August 2019.

This. 'We're going to do something about brain injuries from heading. But only in five years' time' would be a really stupid approach.

But it is ridiculous and not football, especially if you are academy level.

But we are understanding more and more about the problems related to repeated head impacts in sport. You have a young son, don't you? I'd love my daughter to play football as she grows up, but I'd like her to do so in the safest way possible based on the extent of our medical understanding of the physical impact of sports.

I shouldn't worry Sangers IMHO there will be no heading in football at least within the junior game within the next 10 years.
The professional game may take longer but I reckon it will disappear sooner rather than later.

I do get more headaches than I used to when younger and I do wonder whether heading the old leather ball had an impact long term .

Yeah but I want him to play properly and have have a disadvantage and I cannot see how that is going to ever happen if you cannot head a ball (basic skill) or do long balls or passes

what about goal kicks or balls over the top? do you just tell them to completely leave it?

what about rugby? or any combat sport?

But that’s a major part of the debate isn’t it

The old leather balls were clearly a major head impact source, but todays lighter balls would appear to have much less impact.

Not that it’s a race for the bottom but there are far worse sports for DELIBERATE head injuries that should be way ahead of football for making safer

Precisely. Ban ALL combat sports or anything touching the head.

And what about the sports where there is a very real danger, WAY MORE, then football at hurting your head or injuring it?

Ice Hockey? Getting smashed to bits
Field Hockey? Ball at the head
Cricket? Ball at the head
Horse riding? Falling off the horse or getting crushed
Rugby?

What price long-term injury for the sake of doing things 'properly'?

Sport is thankfully moving with the times, albeit in many cases too slowly. Cricket helmets have been changed to provide more protection to batters; field hockey protective gear for keepers has seen wholesale changes and in the junior game; youth ice hockey involves full face-guards, gum shields, and in some case neck protectors. But in none of those sports is taking the ball with the head part and parcel of the game. We don't yet know of the longer-term effects of lighter footballs - maybe there is a marked improvement, maybe not. We won't know until Rio and John Terry etc are in their 50s and 60s.
