South Coast Royal

Hendo Must be pretty boring.

Titles since the Primeria Liga's inception since 1934.

Benfica 37
Porto 29
Sporting Lisbon 19

Beleneses 1 (1945-46)
Boavista 1 (2000-01)

And only 12 times in the last 50 years has a team outside of the 'big three' finished in the top three places in the league.

Was amazed that Braga have never won the league, tbf.

This is the way the Premier League seems to be going with Liverpool, City and Chelsea .

Not sure I agree on that. Over the last 6 seasons we have 7 different teams finish in our top 3, with 4 different champions

I was thinking more about winners (rather than top 3) and since Chelsea and then City got the big money ,i.e the past 18 seasons.
In that time only twice has a team won it outside of Man City, Chelsea and Man Utd.

One of those was Liverpool and I see them now as a much greater force than Man Utd but even so over 18 years the top 4 clubs in England have won it 17/18 times and of course for comparison purposes there are 20 teams here rather than 18 in Portugal.

We have seen what a big part new money can play, especially with City and Chelsea and once upon a time with Man Utd so maybe a Newcastle could make the breakthrough.
At the moment though it does feel as though Liverpool, City and Chelsea are some way ahead of the rest which I feel is a shame.

I almost feel like we have broken through money controlling who wins the league, as we now have 4 (5 with Newcastle) that can spend vast amounts and how often in the past did we have more than 4 or 5 competing for the title anyway?

I am now tempted to look back over time periods and see how many teams won the league

80-81 - 89-90 4 League winners (Villa, Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton)
90-91 - 99-20 4 League winners (Arsenal, Leeds, Man Utd, Blackburn)
00-01 - 09-10 3 League Winners (Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea)
10-11 - 19-20 5 League Winners (Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Leicester, Liverpool)

I'm not sure we'll such a trio of teams dominate in England like in Portugal. First because it is a 'bigger' league - players will join other clubs because playing in the Premier League for someone is a good thing. And it's harder to stay at the top. Despite Liverpool's success, Mo Salah might be off in the summer. Mane too. Heads turned by La Liga. Jota, Diaz and Elliott might be winning the Premier League in a few seasons, but it's much tougher maintaining 85-90 point seasons in England than it is staying top 3 in Portugal, or Holland.

Some talk here of adding play-offs to the Bundesliga.

Essentially the top 4 would go into semi finals with the winner of them being crowned Champions. Semi finalists would all get a CL spot.

Bayern actually seem to be pretty supportive of it but perhaps surprisingly some of the smaller clubs don't seem to like the idea.

I like the idea, but not sure how I feel about the team coming 4th potentially being champions.

I absolutely hate the idea. It ceases to be a league if the team that is top after all games have been played isn't the winner.

Once you are confident of top 4 you can completely give up on the rest of the season until the play offs start

Bayern are currently 18 points clear of 5th place with a 3rd of the season left to play. They could put their feet up. Or take the first XI on a money spinning promotional tour somewhere leaving the rest of the squad to play the league matches

Easy to forget that Portugal has a population of only 10 million and a third of them live in Lisbon. Second City Porto has a,similar population to Reading. The Netherlands is about the size of East Anglia and the South East. I guess when you're a geographically small country dominated by 2 or 3 big cities, you're always going to see 2 or 3 teams dominate.

Messi claims top spot in the all time most missed penalties in competitive matches league table. He is now on 30 while Ronaldo is in 2nd place on 29

(quite a misleading stat)

**Ajax goals conceded watch**

A 1-0 win today. Still just 5 league goals conceded this season. 11 games left.

For all their ability, neither are brilliant penalty takers. Messi in particular has a pretty poor record (103 scored out of 133, 77%) given his dead ball ability. Ronaldo has missed 29 but has scored 143 (83% success rate).

Not sure about now but I always used to love watching Shearer's penalties. No fcuking about, just smash it as hard as you can.
