It's tough, as players like Obita may not come back the excellent player he was, but to replace him, would take a good wad of cash. Other players like Osho, Holmes, McIntyre etc may be a season away from being worth £5m+, but if you were to receive a bid today??

Players like Gunter and GMac, should, in my opinion, have their contracts renegotiated to be in line with our current predicament; I'm convinced neither want to leave and are great guys in the dressing room. Sadly, they cannot stay on their current terms!

If Edwards leaves this summer without any kind of a deal it will be for the measliest of compos, we certainly aren't in a position to give an asking price for him. Not certain, but I think same applies to CBC, though rumours have suggested he will now sign a new deal.

I would think not too (although I’d rather keep him, and give him a proper run in the team), it just highlights the ridiculous fees if Barrett is currently ‘worth’ two and half times that.

It's a fairly interesting exercise in pure guess work but the Barrett valuation is simply laughable.....

To be honest, trying to put a value on any of the players is like pissing in the wind, particularly with as yet bet part academy players. I can understand why someone could value Gunter at nothing and Howe at £1m when you take into account wages, potential to improve etc, it's partly the cost benefit on the here and now and partly the old Darius Henderson conundrum of "Could this player save us having to spend £2.5m further down the line".

On the other hand, the consensus was that we were right to turn down a £3m offer for Aaron Kuhl. In hindsight, it was a mistake but then again, he could have gone to Citeh, bounced around in loan for 3 years, not got his injury and now be carving out a half decent career for himself in the Championship.

Agreed. One, he’s playing Scotland and two, there’s no money in Scottish football. Recouping what was paid to Coventry is likely to be the best Reading could get.

If you read what I put at the bottom, I said I’d like to renegotiate Gunters contract. Failing that, yes, Gunter is being paid £1.25 million a year (I’d guess), the youth boys more like £50-100k, so giving away Gunter for free would free up a million quid for FFP. Rating Holmes at a million is because he has at least another season here for cheap to prove himself, and who knows what might happen- put simply, the low earners are not worth selling unless for excellent money.

So would I. Gomes, however, plays a 4-3-3 system with a number 10 like Swift (or Barrett!), not a floating poacher like McNulty. He is absolutely not a Gomes player.

Meh, I think he could do broadly the same job as Loader did.

Considering either McIntyre or Osho is currently notionally part of the first XI, it's strange to value them at one-seventh of a 15 year old who will probably never play professional football. Similarly, selling Bod at a loss despite this being the best spell of his career.

Looks like the players in the shop window are Moore, Swift, Meite, Barrow, Loader, and the deadwood like Meyler. With that in mind, I'd be happy to sell Swift and Barrow for £5m and the others for £7m. That's based on my shaky assumption of our financial situation.

Think the player I'd actually want the most for would be McIntyre. I'd want enough to end any FFP concerns and have enough left to sign Miazga or similar.

It's a weird one, because what actually is value?

What you'd be willing to sell someone for?
What you'd need to spend to replace them?
What you'd spend to sign them?
What another team would be willing to pay for them?

How much affect does contract length have?

It is hard to define. As a simple definition, I'd put it down to how much you would be willing to buy/sell a player at

But there are so many factors affecting value. Contract for one as you say. I don't think contract plays a huge role apart from the instance of them having less than 12 months on a contract. Like Alexis at Arsenal going on the cheap etc

But also things like timing of the bids would come into play. You may value a player at "X", but if they offer that amount on the 31st August as opposed to mid-June, you'll likely reject it because you won't have the time to replace them. Similarly, the quantity of players in a position. If we have 8 CM's, you're more likely to accept an offer to re-invest in other areas. If there is a real lack of quantity in positions, you'll want more than their supposed "value". Like Moore with us this season, as our only senior CB
