sandman Brilliant performance from Stuart Burt, easily United's MotM.

Yeah should have stood. Would be interested to hear why the official
gave it as offside. Can only assume some kind of confusion with
Bertrand's movement?!

General issue: not sure how someone in the box, two yards from the
goalscorer isn't influencing play but a bit of video replay would have
sorted this out.

Absolutely shocking decision. Feel sorry for Saints. Played very well.

The ref tried his hardest yesterday and they still didn't beat 10-man Bournemouth.
I am no fan of Bournemouth (a long story) but they were really hard done by yesterday.
Presumably both Mings and Ibra will get 3 game bans especially as the ref took no action.

I do have some sympathy for Surman - although TBF he should not have become involved. Classic case of a referee thinking: "I must caution someone here..."

I dont think Mings should be banned.

He actually wasn't looking at Zlatan when he made contact so there is no real evidence that his stamp was deliberate. I don't think anyone but a psycho would look, see approximately where the head was then look away and see what damage he inflicted later. And actually there's nothing to suggest Mings IS a psycho.

He should be let off.

Ibra's elbow most certainly was deliberate so he definitely should be banned.

Of course this is Bournemouth and Man Utd we are talking about here so the actual verdicts are entirely likely to be the other way around.

I agree about Mings. The more I've seen it the more I think he had no intention to stand on ZI. He's looking intensely towards the ball and his whole focus seems to be on that.

Whatever argument you have for one applies to the other

Zlatan nearly/attempted(?) stamped on Mings a little earlier
in the game (if you require motive etc).

You can suppose what you want, based upon your bias.

Surman was the fall guy...he shouldn't have been involved.

He looks down at Zlatan so has a fairly good picture of his position

Zlatan also does not take his eyes off the ball.

Both were pursuing retribution

What you think hugely dependent upon priors.

This is Zlatan throwing Mings to the ground

Both should get three match bans

Possibly the most ridiculous quote of the weekend is Rooney's that he saw the stamp 'with my own eyes'.

Having looked at the replay, Rooney was looking in entirely the other direction doing what comes naturally - moaning at an official, presumably about the tackle on him.

Both Mings and Ibrahimovic are guilty as (they will be) charged. 3 match ban each

Good synopsis re. Rooney FF

Guess he watched the slo-mo replays a dozen or so times on his big screen. Unlike the ref at the time.

I can see Mings either way. He clearly looks down at Ibrahimovic, but also quite clearly stumbles on his way. You'd think he should still be able to leap over him though. Personally, I'd er on the side of not deliberate for Mings. It just doesn't seem very effective or safe as a method of putting one on an opponent.

There is no way on earth Zlatan didn't know exactly what he was doing. He may not be looking, but there's only one reason your elbow flies back like that. There is no chance that he's just using it to jump and protecting himself. Stone cold deliberate.

...suspect the ref saw enough to send both off (at least once apiece) but used his own (mis) judgement to leave both on and hope that summarily despatching Surman might get them both to behave - which in part they did from then on.

Of course ideally that's not his call to make and in spite of any retro-retribution handed out depending upon what he reports - either way Friend is on as similarly dodgy ground as Ibra & Tyrone.

He had to book Surman (again) for the shove but then that doesn't explain why he didn't take action earlier, when Zlatan chucked Mings over to get away from him.

... the elbowing is inexcusable but I also thought Mings visibly led with his arm across Zlatan's throat too - just doesn't make any strong contact before he cops the elbow.

...all grist for the mejia !

I've only seen each incident once. In Mings' case I can see how it might be deemed accidental but he's lucky to stay on. With Ibrahimavic, he seems to make a clear, deliberate motion with his elbow towards the player. Clear red in my opinion.

Yep, looks as deliberate as Costa's did against Liverpool last* season, he knows exactly where he is.

*was it the season before?

BR0B0T Zlatan also does not take his eyes off the ball.

Maybe, but he's deliberately chucked his elbow back knowing exactly where Mings' head is. Its a secondary action to using his arms to jump so nothing to do with getting leverage.

Both are red cards.

for me there's enough doubt wrt Mings' intentions, especially when you consider that when he jumped over Zlatan he got bumped by Rooney, possibly affecting him? Having said that he may well have meant it and there's every reason when you see the pcunt's trick that Zlatan pulls with the elbow, so deliberate it makes you wonder how shitfaced those ref's got on their stag last wek.

FWIW as I type they've both been charged with violent conduct and the FA want more than the standard punishment apparently

Both charged, but Mings may face further sanction if guilty because 3 games would be 'clearly insufficient' according to the FA.

I think that we and the FA should take notice of you as you are the expert at watching football highlights on a screen whereas most of us..................................................

Can't believe anyone is arguing that both incidents - if spotted - should not have been red cards.

Both dirty pieces of play, both deserve a ban.

Mings clearly knew what he was doing and with the conflicting comments on here show that he executed his plan to perfection.

Zlatan - again - retribution - but not as clever - guilty.

3 game ban for Zlatan - 4 or 5 game ban for Mings.

I'm not sure I follow the logic in different penalties assuming you conclude both committed violent conduct by striking the other's head. Stamping someone's head into the ground I can see, but that jumping over catch him with your boot and a clear elbow to the face? I'd give them the same... though 5 seems more appropriate than 3 if you're concluding both were deliberate attempts to harm.

Maybe it's just my perception having heard about stamp and elbow and watching to find the stamp looked less bad than I expected while the elbow was exactly as I imagined.
