Sutekh Was it Focher doing the phoning? Not happening otherwise. Bit organised of them as well given Mr Crouch wouldn't be able to actually play for us until January.

Norfolk Royal I'm not sure how you would conclude that a person was 'house hunting' because they were stuck in a traffic jam in Arborfield.
Although it may be possible that this particular house in Arborfield is so sought after that there was a traffic jam of prospective buyers all going there at the same time.

If two clubs wanted to, they could let a player go during the transfer close by terminating his contract with an agreement in place that the new club buy some random rubbish youth player when the window opens for about the cost of the free agent player transfer if they were not a free agent... technically, nothing illegal but I'm sure there is something the FA could do to penalise the clubs for being unethical.

Dear out of towner,
the background to my little tale is that the M4 was closed yesterday morning so the 'ding was in gridlock with folk from all around the town phoning in to BBCRB with tales of their epic journeys to work, hospital or whatevs.
It was all pretty dull until the presenters said "so and so has just been on the phone from Arborfield to back up someone else's (I wasn't listening that closely) story about seeing Peter Crouch and Abby Clancy in the traffic. They're house hunting but wouldn't say which club"
I wasn't there, just relaying the rumour.

You can only sign a free agent if they were a free agent when the window closed.

Okay, I didn't know the full rules - my fault, I now realise that similar signings we're for players not registered.NamelessPepe the Horseman Technically you can sign a player anytime. What you can't do is register him to play for you. But you COULD sign Crouch tomorrow, pay him a huge wage to just turn up for training and wait until Jan 1 to register him. Which would be pretty pointless, but exciting to a hard core pedant.
