Character. It's been missing for years. Seems we've got some back.

Probably not enough there for a bftg thread.

Was my first game this season and a load of new faces on the pitch. Thankfully had the well travelled and knowledgeable LWJ there to do a who's who. Jaakkola looked good, reassuring signing. We were looking good before the sending off and tbf we were looking pretty good after too. There was a lot of shuffling of the back 4 with players in and out of position from the start. Credit to the coaching staff who must have been practicing the 10 man scenario given how we've managed that recently. The massive Gravenberch was massive and a good sub under the circumstances.

Was impressed by Kelly's skillz, despite being 9 years old, Swift looked class, like a trim Caskey.

Thought Mendez did well as a lone striker, has a bit more pace than he looked like he might, able to link up well and pick a pass. Hope he starts to score lots.

Best of all we played like a team and a team that gave a shit. Which you couldn't say about Brighton. There's a bit of a gloomy mood over the Amex this season and if that's a flavour of what they've been looking at you can see why. Plenty of hopeful balls in from them but somewhat one dimensional. They're not playing the sort of creative football they were 2 or 3 years ago.

Ref = shite
Crowd = shite. 6k. LOL. As LWJers said, had the air of a low key pre season friendly.

Brighton were having a proper old sulk over on NSC last night. I saw one person use the word tinpot three or four times in one sentence.

Proper humiliating not to be able to really test Chris Gunter at centreback.

Good to hear Norwood went with his normal atrocious set pieces rather than the occaisionally sublime ones.

Really good to see that our reserve team can take on and beat the Barcelona of the South coast, even with ten men. Delighted for Watson and Kelly who both seemef to have good games. Shame Dom Sam had to come off.

Looking at the team Brighton put out yesterday, the midfield and attack were very experienced, the defence less so.

They had all 4 of their first team attacking players on at the end. Only one academy graduate played for them, none off the bench.

The starting side had a total of 30 Championship appearances between them so far this season, 684 over the course of their career, plus 268 Premier League appearances.

Off the bench they brought on players with 21 Championship appearances so far this season behind them and 117 in total off the bench (0 PL appearances).

I didn't look at how many goals/clean sheets that side has between them. But I'm intrigued.

Looks like a pretty strong/experienced team to be fair. Wonder how that compared to us.

We started 4 academy graduates.

We had between our starting line up, 35 appearances in the Championship this season (5 more than Brighton), 541 over the course of their career (143 - 21% less), plus 82 Prem appearances (186 less).

Off the bench we had players with 15 Championship appearances so far this season (6 less) and 326 in total compared to their 117 (303 are Gunter's!), plus Gunter's 25 appearances to their 0.

So basically, our team that played is featuring a little more in the league this season, although not by a huge amount. However, over their careers the team they used is considerably more experienced at this level. Especially in midfield and attack.

So it's now P11 W7 D3 L2

Would be interesting to compare Clarke's and Stam's PPG.
