Steven Reid could be offered the chance to work towards his coaching badges at Reading.

Former Republic of Ireland international Reid announced his retirement from football last month having come to the end of his contract at Burnley.

He made just seven appearances for the Clarets during a year-long stay at Turf Moor which was blighted by injuries.

He did, however, spend a lot of time coaching the club’s younger players and Clarke is open to him continuing that at Madejski Stadium.

Reid, who played under Clarke while Reading's manager was in charge at West Brom, is in the process of trying to gain his coaching badges.

Speaking after announcing his retirement, the 34-year-old said: “I’m excited about new challenges ahead.

“I’m working towards my ‘A’ licence and look forward to pursuing a career in coaching.”

Clarke is looking to build his coaching staff this summer, having now been at Reading for six months.

When he arrived he said he would take his time before bringing in his own team to work with him at Madejski Stadium.

And he has now clearly started that process as he looks to put his own stamp on things in Berkshire.

In a major recent shake-up, head physio Luke Anthony lost his job, as did goalkeeping coach Sal Bibbo, soft tissue therapist Dan Buchanan and kitman Selby Armstrong.
