...thought there was enough going on midweek to warrant a round-up:-
Monday - surprise home defeat for
Highmoor/IBIS -1-3 to
Wantage Town Reserves who are near the foot of Div One (West) but - for those that aren't familiar - it was only in the Hellenic Supplementary or 'Losers' Cup - a bit of a
repechage competition; open to those knocked out of the first round of the Challenge (League Cup).
In years gone by when postponements due to poor weather have cut a swathe through Nov/Dec/Jan league fixtures, this particular Cup has often been cancelled.
I was at Stubbs Lane for the Floodlit Cup Quarter Final Binfield 6-0 Lydney - Moles aren't missing Dickens whose been snapped up by Burnham. Visitors were run ragged - hat-trick for Pearson and another couple (eventually)- for I Davies.Other semi-finalists in this competition - decided by Tuesday's ties are:
Newbury who bt Div One (West) 'new boys' and long time leaders Longlevens (nr Glawster) on pens; Rayners Lane who won 2-1 at Chinnor and North Leigh Utd (Reserves) who caused another minor shock putting out Ascot Utd 1-0.
Elsewhere on
Tuesday in the Hellenic Premier - Flackwell Heath kept up their surge despatching poor Shrivenham 8-0 - Brimscomb & Thrupp defeated
Thatcham 3-0 whilst in Div One East
Henley Town won 5-3 vs Headington Amateurs.
On Wednesday night there was one fixture in the B&B Intermediate Cup - the much delayed tie twixt 'Freds' (Wantage) Reserves - see above busy week

and Wok & Emm finished 2-1 to the 'Sumas': Wokingham & E now go to the simple delights of Long Wittenham, from the N.Berks league, in this Saturday's Quarter Final. Survive that and they have to go to Oakley Utd from the Oxon Senior League (?) in the Semi.
Bringing us back up above hardcore Anorak-level
- in the Southern League this week Premier leaders Poole followed up their 4-0 romp at Sluff on Saturday with an even bigger win; 6-0 at Bideford.
I journeyed a couple of junctions along the M4 to witness Hungerford Town 2-0 Weymouth - was a thoroughly enjoyable game - 'Crusaders' regularly upset the big boys in this league and though Bulpit Lane might need some serious 'uplift' to be ready for Conference South level, it's great to see a small club be in contention and certainly ready for a go ON the pitch.
This result puts them up into 5th, the last play-off spot, which they only missed out on last season in their final match on GD. No small part of their current success must be down to the off-field abilities of manager Bobby Wilkinson and Asst. Lea Barkus. They seem to create and adapt, sometimes mid-game, a method of play, that a lot of more established sides are unable to cope with. In Div One Central
Chalfont St P lost at Daventry, and in One S&W there was another big win for Nor Lye 4-1 at Wimborne.
To finish off: the Combined Counties didn't see much league action this week - plenty of County/League Cup ties - but what games were played had quite a bearing on the top of the table.
Long time leaders
Cove had slipped a bit of late and dropped to 2nd, last Saturday - they re-took top spot with a 3-0 win over slowly re-assembling
Frimley G on Tuesday. On the same night
Windsor were going down 3-1 at Molesey, who swapped places with the 'Moles' grabbing 3rd place - and with a healthy 4 games in hand. Can't have helped Windsors' cause to have two men sent off - and there was reported scuffling - maybe just 'verbals' - between the visitors bench and some Molesey 'chavs' gathered around.
Camberley ensured Cove's return to the top was short-lived as they won with a very late goal at Colliers Wood on Wednesday night.
