Callum Wilson - Coventry City

by Mr ReadingFC » 13 Jun 2014 08:41

According to Charles Watts:

Reading want to sign Coventry City striker Callum Wilson.

Royals have already made contact with the Sky Blues and registered a firm interest in the 22-year-old frontman who they see as the perfect replacement for Adam Le Fondre, who was sold to Cardiff City last month.

Getreading understands they are one of four clubs who have made approaches for the forward who scored 22 goals last season during a breakthrough campaign in League 1.

But with Wilson valued at close to £3million, any move would have to be subject to cash-strapped Royals being taken over.

Coventry development director Steve Waggart said: “At the moment our view is that Callum is not for sale.

“We have had approaches from four Championship clubs who are keen to secure the services of one of the best young strikers around.

“As it stands we have rebuffed and rejected all offers that have come in.

“We’ve had what I would call four firm enquiries all together, comprising two written bids, one quite firm verbal offer and one indicative enquiry where they have said they are interested.

“They are all Championship clubs, which is to be expected to be honest.”

It is understood that newly promoted Wolves are one of the other clubs also in for Wilson, as are Bournemouth.

The Cherries are currently believed to be leading the race for the frontman who was named Coventry’s player of the season last month.

Bournemouth have already had one seven-figure bid rejected and yesterday they returned to the Sky Blues with an improved offer as they look to find a replacement for Lewis Grabban, who they sold to Norwich City for £3 million.

With such rival interest in Wilson, Reading will need the club’s ownership situation to be sorted quickly to have any hope of landing the striker.

Royals’ chairman Sir John Madejski and chief executive Nigel Howe showed an Asian consortium around the stadium yesterday who have now entered talks to buy the club.

But Vibrac, the offshore lending company who are now handling the sale , are putting interested parties off with their high demands.

Before the Virgin Islands based lender, who are owed over £10m by cash-strapped Royals, took control of the sale, Reading was on the market for just £1, plus the overall £21m debt.

But now Vibrac are believed to have considerably raised the price tag, scaring several interested groups off, including Indian businessman Mohit Burman.

This is, of course, an utterly pointless story as we have no chance of signing anyone until we have a new owner, by which time players like Mr Wilson will long have moved elsewhere if they are any use.

Nottingham Forest and Reading have also been linked with the 22-year-old but development director Steve Waggott has already dismissed the Forest interest and it’s understood that reports of Reading being in the hunt are wide of the mark.

Have liked the player for a while now and believe he could be up to lower Premier League standard.
Would hate it if Bournemouth were to get him.

:x :x :x
Grabban goes and they replace him straight away with somebody similar with the start of the season just 5 weeks from now.
We let our top striker go and........................................................................................
Bournemouth's Russian owner stays in the background, lets Eddie Howe get on with things and just writes the cheques.
Our Russian owner wanted to get involved with buying players and influence team selection.

Go back 3 or 4 years with Bournemouth in Div 1 and unable to buy any players whereas we were a "well-run" club in the Premier League.
My how quickly things change in football.

You sound like you are surprised Victor. Football has been like that for ages. Pick any 5 year period in the last 2 decades and there will be lots of examples of clubs on the up, clubs on the slide.
Here's hoping our new owner ensures we remain ahead of Bournemouth....
