RUMOUR - Drenthe to fulham?

by WoodleyRoyal » 27 Jan 2014 09:39

Fulham are weighing up a January swoop for Reading utility man Royston Drenthe, Sports Direct News understands.

The Cottagers are on the lookout for a left-back and, having had their £4million offer for Swansea City’s Neil Taylor rejected, they have switched their attention to Drenthe, who can operate on the left side of defence or midfield.

Head coach Rene Meulensteen is considering a £2.5million move for his fellow countryman, who has 18 months remaining on his Royals deal.

It is believed the former Everton and Real Madrid man would be tempted by the prospect of a second stint in the Premier League and the opportunity to work under Meulensteen.

Drenthe has made 13 appearances for Reading since his summer free transfer switch from Russian outfit Alania Vladikavkaz.

With Swansea believed to be holding out for at least £6million for Taylor, Drenthe represents a cheaper and more experienced option for the Craven Cottage side.

To be fair - as much b0ll0cks as this is - he did play there for Everton a few times, and he's probably no less of an LB thatn Riise is.

Have to say if that really is a possibility then
A) we should take it, and file alongside Andy Hughes to Norwich and Matt mills to Leicester as stunningly good bits of outgoing transfer business
B) Fulham are desperate and in panic mode
C) Jol may have been a bit rubbish but his replacement is barking mad.....

I am sure this is a joke . But if by some strange quirk of fate it isn't then I would say that Drenthe is not a bad player and does add a touch of excitement and could do a job within a PL squad. Players like Deenthe often look better at the higher level if they get the chance because having better players around them can bring the best out in them.

From our perspective if there is any truth we would be mad not to take the money as we have 4 players who can play the wide role and Drenthe seems to be ranked 5th in line by Adkins (currently I would say his preferences are as follows - McClelary, McAnuff, Blackman, HRK then Drenthe).

Drenthe's agent is a card isn't he!!!

:D

What a fabulous non-story this is, put out by Drenthe's agent to try and see if there is the slightest sniff of interest by any Premiership side for his client.

The chances of Drenthe going to Fulham for £2.5M and to play at left back are precisely nil; but IF it happened (and it is a ginormous IF) then I would laugh myself to the point of having bleeding lungs, then shake my head at the utter, total and complete stupidity that is the Premier League.

What a temptingly delicious prospect though eh? 2.5 big ones for an unfit, albeit exciting, player. Would prefsr if he got an assist for us before he leaves... as a minimum

Whilst I can see the attraction with this, I would be reluctant to let anyone go until we know where the pennies were going. No point in selling Drenthe for however many big ones if it's instantly turned into roubles.

I really like what I see in Drenthe, but he does look like one of those players who may actually never deliver. For £2.5m it's an absolute no brainer.

Only to be replaced by that well known defensive rock Marcelo.

You make a decent point in your first paragraph. Marek Matejovsky being a case in point. Although maybe because there is more time on the ball in The Premier League than in The Championship. As our team didn't change much.
