I'm surprised that Roberts and one or two others are on the retained list. We need squad improvement but it's pointless having players on big salaries not playing. If we bring in a decent striker, an attacking midfielder, a winger etc. we are going to end up with a large squad again and some won't play. Maybe we expect to lose some of the retained list but I still think Roberts is a waste of a shirt.

Isn't Roberts under contract? - If so, we have to honour the contract or negotiate a settlement to terminate it, which may involve paying it up in full.... so, we either keep him or release him and it costs us the same.

Having said that, Roberts may regain his fitness and prove an asset or he may have to retire though injury and we can claim on the insurance.

There are 70 odd pages on the Drenthe thread where people were waiting for him to be signed 'officially' i.e. The club to announce it.

The club never mentioned Pearce being released, the latest news a couple of weeks ago was that he specifically hadn't been released and the club were still in talks with him. That makes any news of him being released look pretty unofficial to me.

How do you know that his wage demands were too high rather than Reading trying to lowball him because he'd come up through the Academy?

Yep, as I said in the Alex Pearce thread:

Why is everyone making such a fuss with the retained and released list? Do people realise they aren't in any way binding?

Please note that players signified as a "free transfer" by a club could remain there next season and so this list should not be seen as definitive for players leaving their club.

Nothing has changed in the Pearce situation since Adkins spoke out about it. Likelihood is he is gone, but we haven't given up.
