"Reading get it off Pat"

I'd barely ever seen Reading get a mention in the nationals until that day, never mind being the lead sports story.

The Wolves manager Sammy Chung got the tin tack shortly afterwards.

He was from Totton wasn't he? He played in a crap league because we were pretty crap then. Now, if he hadn't scored goals in a crap League and had come to us with lots of expectation he might have been viewed as a flop....

The thing about Steve Moran was that he cost a lot of money, was known nationally (we only ever used to buy unknowns up to then), came from a successful club, expectation was huge and he was average at best (until he became fatter, slower, and injury prone)

One of my formative RFC nights. I'm in there somewhere, just above the word 'caravans'. Also vividly recall the Southampton home game - 0-0 and Terry Gennoe kept them in the game (to my biased 12 year old eyes, at least). They went on to the final.

On the basis that Earles nodded in the winner, he can't be considered a flop. I do recall him as a short arsed mediocrity though.

And I'm not being short arse-ist. Bowman and Death were my heroes then.

^^^Agree, the success of that side was the brilliance of Death and Bowman and the solidity of the back four Peters, Hicks, White and Bennet. They were the principal reason for gaining promotion.

Apart from his last couple of seasons when his pace went, Earles gave us good service for the transfer fee we paid (which I think was around the £12k mark) over a number of years, always getting around 15 goals a season. Part of a fairly decent lower league forward line we had back then and with Kerry Dixon coming through.

Always felt sorry for Mark Reilly, at least he had the good grace to admit he was a waste of space (although he was supposedly a ball winning central mid, and Burns played him left wing) and bog off back from whence he came.
