Snowball
For example, Reading FC have a very decent chance of finishing above Southampton
(RFC averaging almost 2 points per game, Saints 1.64 and seemed to have picked up, BTW)
but defeat at Saints would elevate Saints by "1.36 points" and knocks RFC back by 1.96, a
big turn round of 3 points,

Whatever happened to;

1 point for a draw
3 points for a win

By the time we play Southampton, there will be no need to worry about 1.96's, it will be a six pointer!

TOTAL (HOME & AWAY) Games v Contenders

Corrected (Missed some Leicester Games)

Although games against rivals are an opportunity to put the knife in
it's reasonable to expect fewer points per game on average

IMO it looks like closing right up and best bets for top two (odds-wise) right now are Southampton and Birmingham

West Ham have TEN of their last 16 against the biggies compared with Southampton's five games.

So not unreasonable to expect Saints to gain 5 points on West Ham by season's end
(but weighted against that is WHU's game in hand). If Saints have stabilised I expect
it to go to the last day, and it wouldn't surprise me to see four, even five clubs in with
a shout of top spot on the last day of the season

Saints have a real chance of finishing above West Ham as things now stand (if their form has really turned).

Reading have the second-worst run-in (9 tough games) and are going to have to pull of 1-2 big results like a win at Saints, Bru, WHU.

Blackpool, tho' they have 8 tough games have 7 of them at home and could do a lot of damage (helping us)

Toughest Finish at the Top

10 Total 5 Home 5 Away West Ham
09 Total 4 Home 5 Away Reading
08 Total 3 Home 5 Away Leeds
08 Total 4 Home 4 Away Middlesborough
08 Total 7 Home 1 Away Blackpool
07 Total 4 Home 3 Away Leicester
07 Total 4 Home 3 Away Cardiff
07 Total 4 Home 3 Away Brighton
07 Total 3 Home 4 Away Burnley
07 Total 3 Home 4 Away Birmingham
07 Total 3 Home 4 Away Hull
05 Total 1 Home 4 Away Southampton

Sebastian

Without any sarcasm or intent at all: these three posts have genuinely been the first times I consider you to have posted something interesting and worthwhile.

Snowball 1-0 Sebastian, then.

30 16 58 Reading - - - if we'd scored all our penalties, and not had the Palace goal disallowed
30 16 57 West Ham

You could throw in the goal at Blackpool where the ref
admitted (later) that it was a good goal

The reason I chose the Palace goal was it was the final seconds. The Blackpool one anything was first half I think - so hard to tell what outcome would have been.

Agreed (I didn't go) but from reports (and the ref actually apologised) we were wll on top
and probably, if the goal had been given would have gone on to win.

That 6 point turn round might yet cost us dearly

Not disagreeing with this (excluding decimal goals of course) but the closer we get to the end
the dodgier the stats will become.

That might seem odd, but spread over 40 games, losing a game early on (eg West Ham lost 3-0 to us)
the loss can be "amortized" over a fair number of games, but a late defeat to a rival (or beating one) can
have a huge immediate effect. (eg if West Ham beat us or vice-versa it might be hugely expensive to the club)

since sarcasm is usually saying the opposite of what you mean, with some vocal inflection that signals the sarcasm to the hearer, its easy to understand why it is difficult to pick up on it in plain text.
