PistolPete McCarthy was on the bench for Leeds against Derby. Seems Andy Lonergan is their first choice. Bit of a shame...

And twice they have lost. Shame. Though it would be great for McCarthy to step into the breach - it leads to an interesting conundrum for Grayson.

Not sure there's much of a conundrum really, not unless Grayson thinks he has a chance of keeping McCarthy and isn't going to have Lonergan around as his number 1 for much longer.

Sky Sports understands Ipswich Town have completed the loan signing of Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

The promising young custodian has recently completed a successful loan stint at Reading's Championship rivals Leeds United, returning to his parent club on 3rd January.

Ipswich have been looking for a goalkeeper for some time and have now reached an accord to take McCarthy to Portman Road until the end of the season.

McCarthy, an England Under 21 international, is highly regarded by Royals boss Brian McDermott but it is felt regular first team football will aid his progression.

It had been suggested Leeds could try to sign McCarthy on a permanent basis but this was a notion quickly rejected by McDermott.

RoyalJames101 Maybe not such a bad idea. Means a club can't sign him this transfer window and wouldn't surprise me if Feds leaves before next season, so he'll come back in as number 1 with plenty more experience.

Yep. Decent goalkeeper of some potential gets game time at Championship level, whilst the present incumbent - our most improved player under McD? - will (presumably) continue to retain his place in goal, on merit.

Great news on the new contract and hopefully three months at Ipswich will do him good as well

Why is it only an emergency loan? What's the point in not just loaning him for the rest of the season?

Might have something to do with how we can recall him? just a guess.

Yeah I suppose. Seems weird for them to agree to it though, especially after their last loan keeper got recalled and left them in a bit of trouble.

Good news and promising for the future (although we all know that contract length doesn't mean he's staying).

As with Andersen's contract, you wonder if that has some implication on the long term future of Federici. Either way, the club seem to have covered them selves well here so well done McDermott, Bibbo and Hammond for ensuring they see a future here and getting them tied down.

Surely he can't play for us this season if he's played for both Leeds and Ipswich though...

Facking brilliant news. McCarthy and Andersen tied to new deals, cheerio Federici in the summer.
