Tbf we don't know that it IS £900k spent, because we don't disclose what we pay for players or sell players for, plus we'll have paid it in instalments won't we, so we haven't splashed out nearly £1 million in one hit. I hope he's as good as people are saying - we NEED someone to give the team about impetus and spirit.

I am happy with this signing. Its a good move, experienced defender in his prime. I don't care about the money spent, the stature of player speaks for itself. More than happy.

I'd love us to get a striker, BMD has been talking about how " no one can replace long, etc" - none of us want to replace long, we do however need something better than what we currently have up front to score goals. This doesn't mean spending shed loads, le fondre or that lad for 1 mill-ish form MK dons please.

I've been reading page upon page of ill informed sh*te for weeks from those who must have spent their summer riding shire horses as they insisted we wouldn't be spending any money on the squad so, this 900k transfer is one FACT that you and others can eat one pound coin at a time

I haven't insisted at any stage we wouldn't be spending any money. Thats certainly a fact. However I have felt we needed to strengthen after the departures of three central defenders in the summer and am pleased with this signing. It was badly needed. If you have a problem with what I have to say its your problem and not mine.

We know Southampton's 750k offer was rejected so we can be certain that ours was, at the very least, in the same ball park and most probably in excess of it.

We're up to something like £1.5m - £2.3m spent this summer already by the looks of things.

Can't see us spending any more until January, maybe a loanee in, so I think that's what'll happen and probably rightfully so. Manset and HRK look decent and whilst Hunt is a bit crap, he's good at scoring at a decent rate.

I wasn't refering, in particular, to what you may or, may not, have posted but to all the hundreds that insisted we would not be spending large sums on the squad.

If they can spend weeks on their high horses spouting unsubstantiated nonsense why shouldn't I spend a few minutes on my own when it's shown to be complete horse sh*t :|

Yeah, loan a striker until january, someone from the prem. The current strikers we have are rotten.

Ian Royal Would be nice if we signed what we needed before the season starts though Brenders. Or at least before we've thrown away 8 points and the Carling Cup.

This is the point - I wrote the "RFC and transfer window" thread about this issue. There was never any doubt we would buy in an experienced CB. The issue is why could we not have been sorted out by the end of July - in which case we might well now be sitting at the top of the league and in round 2 of the Cup.

Still better late than never. I just do not understand why we have had an inadequate defence until the end of August three years running.

But its the same for everyone, Brighton want to sign two more players (maybe only one more now they signed that guy from Swansea), Saints need a centre-back or two, Leicester need a striker, West Ham need another option up front, Ipswich need defenders, Watford need attacking options, Barnsley have only just signed the midfielders they were needing to bring in, Coventry need a striker, Burnley have only just signed the strikers they need in order to have one on the bench, Millwall still need strikers, Portsmouth need midfielders and fullbacks, Bristol City want defensive signings, Derby have said they still want to sign some more players, Cardiff wants four or five (!) signings to increase squad depth, Leeds' fans want signings and they're desparately short of strikers with injuries atm, Middlesbrough want strikers with Lita and Boyd gone and McDonald injured..

Its the nature of the market, people won't sell players straight away, Sven was saying that Leicester were turning down offers for Waghorn four weeks ago but now are happy to let him go. Nothings changed in that time, its just the way it works unfortunately.

Experienced player who is use to winning games and keeping clean sheets.

Let's hope Gorkss proves to be a very good signing.

brendywendy id quite like to see our current attacking bunch against those two

HRK, McAnuff, Hunt and Kebe taking on Sonko in the box = penalties galore... enough for us to manage to score at least 3.

9 pens in one game

Reaction from QPR-friend (again):

He's a very solid championship defender but very slow. His lack of pace would have shown in the PL. Suspect with the new owners we're looking to bring in a few new faces and need space in the 25. He won't let you down and will chip in with a few goals as well. Good signing for you. I'm a bit annoyed we let him go.

My Blackpool supporting mate said that he's a really good signing for us, will be a solid first team centre back and has a real eye for goal from set pieces.

Feels a bit too good to be true!

Sounds just what we need, a bit of experience at the back.

Will it be a Gorkss and Bongo partnership

or

Gorkss and Pearce

The later works for me.

Sonko.

Gorkss & Pearce all the way for me. Khumalo needs a dropping and some major work in training.

Good signing - just the kind of player we need. Fingers crossed he's up to the job.

Now if we can just land a striker......................

Isn`t Gorkss a left footer and unsurprisingly plays on the left? This is a specialist position and Pearce prefers to play there. Recall how England were exposed in the World Cup with Terry moved to the right side to accomodate Upson. I was never happy with Khizanishvilli as the left sider, all his mistakes came about when he played there. Khumalo may initially partner Gorkss and improve..... Redknapp does not tend to sign complete mugs.
