Red Don't disagree, but to turn it round Hillsborough couldn't have happened in an all seater stadium.

Hillsborough couldn't have happened if Liverpool and Nottingham Forest had decided to play rugby that day instead.

Well, that's how the ruling works currently.

If it was an all seater with the fencing, and poor crowd managment then it would still happen. The fact is with modern day entry into these grounds now and no "caging" of fans it just wouldn't happen again even with an old skooool terrace.
People with the power in football are just wet farts when it comes to this subject, safe standing terraces DO work and they WILL work in England, what's the beef mofos?

It's no longer considered to be a safety issue - it's now a "control" issue. There is a perception that needs to be overcome that the only people who want to stand are hooligans, and so they can't be allowed to because it'll take us straight back to the 80s.

Ahh I see, I must admit the brutal running battles on the terraces of Brentford, Scunny, Rochdale and Peterborough every week are enough to put any human being off.

I've been watching Cheltenham a lot this season and, by far, the largest demographic on the terrace behind the goal is middle-aged men/OAPs.

Perhaps that's just representative of the town itself, though!

to be honest, that was why it was banned. It wasn't that it was unsafe. The government wanted a solution that would increase safety AND limit hooliganism. As a result they chose all-seaters over the government's preferred option of compulsory ID cards for all fans.

It was thought ID cards could lead to trouble with fans not being able to get in, and congestion building up in the area.

Strange now then that so many fans now use an ID card to buy tickets and get in with (almost) no problems at all.

The odd thing was, at the time, fans seemed more opposed to ID cards than to going all-seater.

In the cabinet shake-up following Baroness Neville-Jones's resignation, Angela Browning has joined the Home Office with a crime reduction brief "which includes football safety" ( no prejudice there then - is rugby safety included in the crime reduction brief?)

Do we know her views, if any, on safe standing?

Spot the key word there - reduction. Why would they aim to reduce something that is insignificantly small?

I know football crime is pretty low compared to where it used to be but it is a lot more significant than rugby crime. How many recent examples of worldwide betting scams have involved rugby, for instance?

Far, far fewer than have involved cricket.

Therefore, does her crime reduction brief also involve cricket? And maybe cycling (all of that drug crime going on)?

No mention of any of those in the rant from JStC so I didn't feel the need to respond in that light.

Better not go to Scunny, Peterboro, Aldershot, Morecambe or a host of other grounds, then....

I'd suggest being on the 7th page hints at your judgement being not exactly perfect. Kind of like confusing not wanting something with that desire itself being pointless, I guess.

Made perfect sense to me. Perhaps you just can't understand it because you don't want to?
