Qatar 2022?

by Dirk Gently » 29 Apr 2010 13:40

Qatar has unveiled a plan to build nine "flat-pack" air conditioned grounds if it's awarded the 2022 World Cup.

Three other permanent grounds will be upgraded. The plan will cost US$4 billion - which is achievable through the use of Bangladeshi and Pakistani construction workers who earn the square root of bugger-all each week.

The nine temporary grounds will be able to be disassembled and re-built elsewhere. The ambient temperature in these grounds will be 23 degrees Celsius. Summer temperatures in Qatar can reach 45 degrees.

If they can do it, then why not.

2 hour time difference to the UK so good for us to view on tv - and only a 7 hour flight for those who want to go.

Too right, the world cup should only be held in countries that have won it and not Uruguay because that was too long ago

So you'd just have a closed shop of half a dozen European countries and the few South American ones who can afford to host it?

Not much of a "World" Cup then is it?

Footballing nations with proud history. England have hosted it once. What have Qatar done to enhance the game?

I don't buy that - there should be some aspect of bringing the game to new areas and communities.

I liked the idea of Europe-America-Europe-somewhere else as a rotation, tbh.

My reason for saying no thanks is that it's probably too hot in the summer for players to be playing in. I might be wrong though.

But surely the World Cup, is meant to be a celebration of football, a festival of football, what has Qatar actually ever acheived, and if they weren't to host it, would they qualifiy?
