Negative_Jeff We still have a nickname in regular use.."URZzz". This is a derivative of "The R`s" which was used by QPR for many years until they dropped it about twenty years ago in favour of the poxy "Superhoops".
By the by, why does that geezer on the annoying car insurance advert on TalkSport keep referring to Plymouth Argyle as the Jenners....Shite I`ve just set light to the spatula

..... Which I can't stand, a rip-off from QPR who, for the record, still use the nickname to some degree. I always remember as a kid shouting 'Come on you Royal's' as the players came out of the tunnell at Elm Part, but this mysteriously changed as from about 2000 onwards everyone started saying URz. Why did it change, did an influx of new fans unable to bleat out the one line correctly make a difference or was I wrong all along?! Someone please help! :? :P

I don't know why they refer to themselfs as Rs. After all, their name starts with Q.

Still, we ripped off their shirts so why not their names as well....

Hey knob, if you really hate royalty ( jesus, get over it), then why do you have "Royal Oak" in your location?
they should get over it,oxf*rd off out of their palaces, get a oxf*rd job, and give me my money back, as well as all the money theyve taken from all of my ancestors since their ilk over came from germany.
Not all of the Royals came from Germany.
Looks like we have a "Royalist" in our midst and BW and I are just ignorant phillistines, who should be grateful for the crumbs from the high table! oh yeah that would be OUR table, in OUR palace etc etc. They then have the gall to complain about how "tough" it is, but never tough enough to quit and get a real job though...........thought not!

My guess would be it's similar to Blarmy -> which was originally Blue Army.

URZZZ was originally You Royals!

URZZZ. I don't think I've ever shouted it as in You Rs. It's all one thing, I always think of it as just an unintelligble You Royals!

I'd guess it gradually got more slurred and less intelligible so mid-stage would probably have been U Roalz. Each new fan got further from the original, to the point where new fans assumed it must be URZZZ. And we have had a lot of new fans from the last 10 years.

Er. No. I don't use Blarmy. Who does? And anyway, I seem to remember it used to be Blue And White Army. I've always wondered why the "And White" was taken out. Too long for some people?

Most of the crowd given what it actually sounds like.

And Blue and White Army was always only part of a chant from my experience.

Blue Army!
OR
[insert manager's name here]'s Blue and White Army!
Eg Jim and Mick's/Tommy Burns's/Alan Pardew's. Had to have the "and White" to scan properly.

Of course I could be wrong.

Nice theory but wrong, unless people shouted it in anticipation of us changing our nickname.

Come on You 'r's (aka Come on URZ) has been around years. Although IIRC it was Roger Titford who first wrote it as 'URZ'

Didn't realise it was that old. I've only really noticed it in the last 10 years. Don't recall it at EP much.

Don't recall it ever being a 'mass chant', more the sort of thing individuals would shout, much like today they randomly boo or slag off Kebe !! But it's definitely got along heritage and suggesting we nicked it off QPR is a bitlike suggesting we nicked our green grass off them....

floyd__streete Be honest, do you ever refer to the club by our nickname in conversation?

"Are you going to the Royals game Saturday?"
"I see the Royals have signed Jobi McAnuff"
etc.

No, of course you bloody don't.

I do.
My mates do.
The majority off fans do.
Get off your high horse.

One thing you have to understand about the thread starter is that, sometimes, his threads are very tongue in cheek. I think this one falls into that category...

Understood.
Still annoyin', though!

Oh my giddy aunt, you young'uns. If I may have the temerity to interject...

St Roger of Titford certainly may have been one of the first to have gone in to print with: "URZ" but this was simply a convenient bastardization of the good old Berkshire burr which emanated from those gathered on the South Bank right on kick-off: "G'arn URZzzz!"

Indeed, I still befuddle and confuse the denizens of Bling Bling City with the an aged and peeling sticker with said epigram proudly displayed in the back window of my motor.

I'm going for a lay down before venturing out for the footy tonight.
