Dorset-Knob Bravo messrs Herring and Ark Royal, (I'm sure there are others I've missed too, sorry) but your recent posts were, all at the same time, funny sad, accurate, thoughtful and full of resonance.

I too am now pleased to be more involved with my 11 year old son's football career and it is head and shoulders above the 'hypeshyte' we've come to know. Spoilt only, sometimes, by the mimicing of the histrionics we see from the professionals.

The Enforced absence and withdrawal symptoms were difficult at first, but occasional visits served to confirm that the football was only a thin filling in a grossly bizarre, turgid, bullshit sandwich. Perspective is a much clearer view and the heart head conflict is far easier to rationalise from afar

I guess nostalgia ain't what it used to be! :)

ps I think, "Love football, hate hypeshyte" sounds like a tee-shirt I might wear

Great post Dorset-Knob. You filled in some of the additional things that I wanted to say, but just could not find the words.

What's more this forum was good in the 90's, and now it's full of bithcing, brown nosing, and "hypershyte" in equal measures.
To remind myself of that fact i'm now going to ban myself via the gift of the windows host file.

FiNeRaIn Why don't we all support proper football, like US College football. Played in front of 90,000, f ck all money involved and no crowd violance.

Whose up for michigan away on a tuesday night boys?

Will there be coaches provided by STAR? if so IN

i couldn't help but notice the Dorset Knobs location, yet another tribute to class 50, but this time 50017.

Just imagine how good my life was, Elm Park and 50's.

Vision If its not Reg Hollis I'll eat my jester hat.

If it's a young June Ackland then I'm greasing up my rumblestix and getting a season ticket.

Dirk Gently Yep, I know an awful lot of people who have/are falling out of love with football.

The sheer cost in terms of time and money with little pay-back, the comtempt that is shown to their supporters by many clubs and the TV companies, the lack of "connection" between supporters and clubs/highly-paid, imported-in players, the lack of competition and mobility etc etc etc

It's a growing trend, with lots of statistics to support it.

Summed up perfectly by Herring and Ark.

Happened for me years ago, and I'm happy with my new love.

Sadly we're looked down upon by everyone from the footballing world. But £10 in for a top flight game, beer in your seat, no segregation and a drink with the players after the game. they all wander into the supporters bar for a drink, and an impromptu kick about on the pitch with said players after most games too.

I love Rugby League, it really is something to be a part of.

The one problem with Rugby League though is that it really can be dull most of the time.

Maybe because I'm young and didn't grow up with terracing etc. I don't feel the effects of the modernisation of the game as much as some others, but I still find myself loving the game regardless. Watching Reading play at the week-end is still pretty much one of the highlights of my week, and regardless of the crap that goes on before and after; there is nothing better than a decent game of reasonable quality football.

So to those who find themselves 'falling out of love' with football, my suggestion would be to just enjoy every RFC game you go to. Don't sit there miserable with the way things are, and try and analyse every little flaw in the team. Just engage yourself in the match and atmosphere, and suddenly things seem alot better.

Here, here Winch and fine sentiments indeed.

Despite my fear and trepidation about the game as a whole, I can still induce the feelings that you allude to on my two or three trips back to the Madstad a season. However, it still does not change my opinion that the game as I knew is dying, if not already a stiff. In saying that my uncles - who were, and still are RFC regulars originally from the 30s and 40s - would argue the same point about my earlier emotional missive. Trying to add perspective and reason to eras of football past is highly subjective.

Focher nice post ark royal, although i will add your name sake, 50035, has now been painted into Load haul livery and has been re numbered 50135. I fuking disgrace if you ask me.

The English Electric CSVT Diesel on the Class 50 was a smart bit of kit Foch. Interestingly the Class 50 was only one of three British Rail traction units using a Woodward control instead of that Paxman rubbish. I believe the works at Newton le-Willows is now a retail park.
Some brilliant stuff about the football, honest if it wasn`t for the beer and me mates I wouldn`t come.

We go to the match in hope. We win convincingly. We are elated.
We go to the next match in hope. We draw. We still have hope.
We go with hope to the next match. We are tonked.
We go to the next match in hope. We lose. Our chins are on the floor.
But we still go to the next match because - above all - we love and support our team.

We are FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS! :)
