Who has been the best club captain over the recent years?

by Thaumagurist* » 09 Jul 2009 15:20

It's a long summer, so why not discuss something...:|

Anyway, who was the best one out of that lot? I'm going as far back as 1986....You might want to add your own nomination!

Murty for me. I don't think you can understate his role in the 106 team as, not only as a leader but as a model professional off it. He epitomised all that was great about the club and I don't think its coincidence that the club has struggled when he's not been around.

Murty for me, surprised to see Ivar the Engine not given his own mention in the poll list though.

Oops yes, sorry that was me mis-reading it!

The role now is also very much more high profile than it was in, say, Martin Hicks' day. I mean 24*7 dedicated sports channels, internet, media generally, club website continually keeping everyone informed and therefore so much more interest and involvement for players so its difficult to judge them evenly.

As people they're all tip top top whole blokes.

I feel I've got to vote for Phil Parkinson because I cannot remember many captains dashing out of the tunnel towards the South Bank/East Stand before kick-off and applauding the fans.

You can't just leave it there, come on, details details!!

Close call between Parky and Murty for me, I think Murty just shades it for reasons already given, and also that he was a better player than Parky and played regularly in a side that was a success at a higher level.

At the post play-off final party at the town hall in '95, I was doing the rounds with my scrap of paper getting autographs. A couple of players were mingling anyway, and others were eating, but were happy to put their plates down, sign my scrap and let me carry on with a wink and a smile (including Shaka who had hands bigger than any I'd seen in my preceding 10 3/4 years!).

But not Adie, oh no."Excuse me, can I have your autograph?"

"oxf*rd off kid, I'm eating  "

I don't blame him. Who'd want to be pestered by some kid while you're eating something?

Best player who happened to be captain, or best at captain regardless of how good a player they were?

It's open to how you interpret it.

You're lucky you weren't going out with. He'd have battered the oxf*rd out of you.

For me as much as Murty was a fantastic leader and top all round bloke, there can be only one. Phil Parkinson was the number 1 for me, partly because of the pitch invasion for the Brighton game when all the fans were streaming on the pitch, it was like the Red Sea parting and there was Parky in all his glory in front of me. I promptly ran up to him and gave him my best non gay Bear hug!! Then I scarpered off the pitch before the stewards or Police could kick my arse.
Sorry if thats a poor reason but I love the bloke!!!

LOL @ 'but not Adie, oh no'

Adie Williams used to be in my top 5 favourite Reading players ever. He is now in my top one.
