No it's not. Coppell had previously mentioned he fancied a break on numerous occasions. He felt he owed us something last summer and stayed on for one final season. It's all but certain he will take this break/retiremement this summer and go wish our best wishes.

Definitely urban myth !!

I'd agree that there is a good chance he may decide he's done his job here but I don't think there is any evidence that he 'decided' to stay for a 'final' season and the 'need a break' comment was very much a one off throw away. If he'd said it on numerous occasions he'd have gone last summer.....

How? Coppell was quoted a number of times in the local press, albeit a year plus ago.

Coppell has said today in the EP that all these reports in the media that he's quitting/retiring/going to take a break in the summer are cr*p and he has no idea where they've come from. As ever he has not decided what he will do as yet and won't until after the season is over.

So I expect him to take his usual 2 week holiday, after its all over, and then return to Reading for next season's shenanigans.

Exactly, local press repeat the same quote several times and it suddenly becomes a 'fact' !!

He mused on whether he might need a break and suddenly it becomes a fact that he's going this summer !!

No wonder he hates the press.....

THere have been other comments along similar lines.

It's not hard to surmise that Coppell is likely to leave at the end of this season. All though the more the media prints about it happening, the more likely it is to give Coppell the desire to stay and not give them a hint of being right.

It was probably going to be a hard choice for him without all this.

Of course it's not, his contract is up for one thing.....

it's the bit about him going because he 'fancies a holiday' that is the dodgy bit.

You're the only one who interprets it as fancies a holiday. World of difference between that and what was said.

How do you know ?

Last season whilst he was obviously struggling he said that he quite fancied a break (break = holiday ? Pretty standard usage...)

He'd quite obviously got over that at the end of the season - because he's still here. he's also made quite clear comments that he's not hanging on desperately until tomorrow so he can chuck the towel in and play golf for a year. It's only you and Deathy who have decided that he's had it and can't wait to quit. Although plenty of others quite rightly suggested that there could be a major decison on footballing grounds at the end of the season for Coppell and the club. The ' I need a break' theory is the one that doesn;t really make sense

Oh get a grip.

Fancies a holiday does not equal in need of a break from football to rechargerefresh your ideas.

First one suggests two weeks in Spain for a nice break, the second suggests something rather different.

Methinks you've kind of missed the point Ian......

Of course the two are as near synonymous as possible. Certainly in this context.

if he'd fancied a sabbatical of any length for any purpose he'd have taken it last summer, when he felt he needed it.

He may decide to step down in the next few weeks, but there's no sign it's a foregone conclusion because he wants time out of the game (for whatever reason and for whatever length of time).

I'm not sure where this specific discussion is going, the level of hair splitting would make you think it was Spacey at the other end of the line !!!

Elliott "Watford manager Brendan Rodgers says a new pitch rather than new players would help him develop his desired passing game at Vicarage Road. (Daily Express)"

If this is his attitude, then I wouldn't mind if he was the man to replace Steve Coppell at the end of the season. Our pitch has actually been raped this season and getting a new one would be a great priority.

The "passing game" idea would suit us pretty well too.

Well, you got your wish in a round-a-bout sort of way - the pitch was as good as new on Sunday!

Coppell is gone at the end of the season. I think the future of the team is reliant on the academy, so I think Brendhan Rogers is more than suitable for the job. I can't really see who else. Certainly not Curbishley..

Chaney
Rev Algenon Stickleback H The odds of Watford just letting their new manager leave are pretty slim I'd have thought.

And after all the moans about McGhee and Pardew walking out on us, it'd be pretty rich of us to be OK with trying the same thing.

the big difference is the fact Leicester and West ham asked permission to talk with our managers, it was denied each time, but that didn`t stop them going behind our backs to take them, RFC does things the right way, we approached Brighton about Coppell and we were given permission to talk to him, if Watford deny our approach then the interst will be finished

Shocked that we still need to explain this crucial and obvious difference to people!

Some bloke on our site thinks you have been talking to Rodgers for weeks...and its only a matter of time before an annoucement is made (they are just spreading the time out to make it less obvious)

He seems pretty certain its right but doesn't seem like your style to go behind the backs of other clubs and nick their managers....
