Who's gone that your REALLY REALLY wanted ?

by The Insider » 17 Jul 2008 10:10

Whilst I am as frustrated as the next man about our lack of transfer activity to date (if only for a bit of excitement), I would invite your thoughts about the players that have been transferred to Championship clubs in the last month, and those you feel we've missed the boat on.

From my perspective , Glen Little aside , we haven't yet lost any of our current troops so we are no weaker than last year. Add to the fact that I can't honestly name any one player that has transferred to a Championship side that I am gutted to have missed out on, and I think maybe we should cut Coppell a bit of slack regarding his transfer activity, it's only mid July.

Opinions and thoughts invited.

My opinions are:

- The players that have transferred so far are not the only players available. Why don't we take the lead for a change?
- Clubs do do business in June and July.

Ryan Bertrand. Ferrie Bodde - I know he's not gone but he's taken himself off the market. I'm sure there are more.

I think Wes Houlihan is a player that could have provided the creativity we'll be missing with Little going.

Be honest now - had your heard of him before the media interest in his proposed move to Derby? I hadn't.

Shouldn't this really be in UR&G?

But if not, the player I really, really, want is the one who no-one knows about. The one no-one has heard of who signs from a club like Cork City for next to nothing.

We've never made a success of signing well-known players and we never will - we're not that type of club! Our next success stories will be unknowns - risky signingsmade for peanuts that pay off for us.

Fair point, and we shouldn't know of a lot of our targets because we've not got a worldwide scouting network to build up a bit of extra knowledge.

I think we have to break out of the bargain basement attitude at some point though and I think your assesment is a little harsh on a few of our recent signings. Considering the level we were playing at and their reputations at the time I think the likes of Sidwell, Little, Duberry maybe, Harper, Lita, Hahnemann, possibly Gunnarsson, and going back a bit further Cureton, Forster and Caskey were all what you could consider to be big names that came here and had a pretty productive time.

Although not technically gone, I think Clinton Morrison would have done a good job for us.

A few players who have already moved on who I think could have done a good job for us are:

David Jones (yes he was at Derby but he was very good at Preston and then Derby when they went up)
Marcus Bent (would give us something we don't have upfront)
Freddie Eastwood (although he's a pikey he could've been a reasonable replacement for Kitson)
Nick Carle (if we're losing Harper Carle might've been a decent addition, even if he's not the ideal partner for Marek)
Kris Commons or Lee Holmes might've been half decent gambles to replace Hunt
and if we lose Lita or Doyle then Morrison would've been a pretty good replacement for them too

A long way to go yet, and I'm hoping we've got a few tricks up our sleeves yet, but I'm not holding my breath!

Fair enough, yes. Sidwell and Harper were good bets and great successes, although I wonder how many of the people posting on a thread like this at the time would have heard of them. Maybe Sidwell but I doubt Harper. But for every Duberry there is a Ferdinand and I suspect we're just disagreeing on how "big "the individual names are.

But the key to it has to be hunger - for many of the "established" names bandied about we'd be just another club, just another pay packet. the success of the 2006 season was in finding a team who all had such hunger and desire to be successes that they made the whole team successful. I just think that level of hunger and desire won't come with players who are established and have found their level - it'll come with virtual unknowns and with people who have failed elsewhere.

Heaven forfend ((C)Platypus) that it might actually come from those we've already invested time and money in.
