Sarah Star I don't suppose there's a cheap version of Fabregas out there, is there?

His name is Marek Matejovsky.

He's obviously not as good as Fabregas, but he's a similar sort of player and the closest thing to him you could hope for in the Championship.

I guess, I'm sure he will be a success in the Championship. I just don't think he did much in the Premier League, I didn't see in him what others did. To be honest I still have the relegation-blues.

What wages would Fabregas been on in his first seasons at Arsenal?

Flamini was on under £8 k a week before he left Arsenal, iirc.

Fabregas is on around £35k a week according to an Arsenal source I have, which makes the fact that we were paying £25k a week for Stephen Hunt all the more laughable.

Then what was he on?

I definitely remember reading that (possibly Guardian) and it is believable - joined Arsenal at the age of 19/20 having played a handful of games in France. He was offered significantly more at the end of that first contract but was only at Arsenal for one, four year contract.

I might be wrong, I am very probably wrong, but I'd much rather be corrected than simply told its wrong.

I'm with RR here. There is no way that that someone playing regularly for a team competing in both the Prem and CL would have been on less than half of what Stephen Hunt was earning here.

All Arsenal players are on relatively poor basic wages in comparison to teams around them, I know that it is all worked through off shore bank accounts for tax purposes so they receive a bigger percentage of their actual pay. Flamini being on a very low pay deal is feasible given that he did not renew his contract during his time there and his age at the time

I also remember reading that Flamini was on about 8k a week, because I remarked to Schards that we should have got him.

I don;t think our 8k would be worth anything like the 8k Arsenal may have been paying him !

That's what I said when he asked me what we were getting for our £25k.

You must remember that footballers of foreign origin are non domiciles for UK tax purposes. That means that they pay full UK tax on income arising in the UK but are exempt on income abroad. Theefore it is bneficial for them to have two contracts one providing for a basic UK salary and the other providing for additional payments such as for image rights to go to an offshore service company. They then only pay tax on a small part of their total earnings from the club. This arrangement was challenged a few years ago by Inland Revenue who took a well known player to court but they lost and since then all top foreign players will have gone for this type of arrangement.

It is therefore likely that the low figure quoted for Flamini is correct but in reality is just his UK taxed earnings.

Fabregas is on £50k+, soon to be significantly more.

Flamini has been on circa £25k.
