Platypuss Sonko appears to be building bridges:

Hmmmm, it all sounds good, but he still didn't say why he refused to play in a reserve game.

thought it said because he didnt want to get injured for little reason before imporant games in his INTL career-coppell disagreed though, and the fine and ban stood
good to see sonks taking his medicine like a man unlike fae

I was there at Elm Park Am I the only one who thought that Sonko was being shown up before his injury too? I can remember quite a few penalties he gave away and he was always doing amazing last ditch tackles, which sounds good but they were occurring far too often. If we can get the £2-3m mentioned then I think we should definitely take it. Especially when you consider that we already have Ivar, Dubes, Bikey (if he stays), Cisse and Pearce. That list doesn't even mention Sodje who at Championship level is a decent defender and at the moment probably isn't far off Sonko.

You're right about Sonko before his injury. A bit too slow, little lapses of concentration, just occasionally out of position. He was alright in the Championship, but found out in the Premiership.

Biskitman He was alright in the Championship,

only alright?!? Have you forgotten how fantastic he was back then that led to fans calling him "superman"? I wish I could get that pic of him outjumping Southampton players in the rain on here, but it's on a bebo site and my work server stops me from getting it.

OK, 'alright' was understating it. But the point is he was found out in the Premiership, partly because of the faults I mentioned, and partly because his injuries/absence for a non-playing role in the African nations cup only served to highlight that he was off the pace when he came back into the side. Not convinced he would be "superman" in the Championship now - as far as I'm concerned, he wouldn't even be in the starting 11 if everyone else was fit.

Given time and application I'd say he has a very good chance of getting back to his previous form. Pre-season counts for a lot in a players preparations (some more than others).

There's no doubt that Sonko makes mistakes. All defenders do. When he's at his best though he is bar far our most dominant centre back and he had a very good knack of combining his pace and strength to make crucial saving tackles and blocks. He's always had a weakness for making silly lunges and getting caught out of position at times but as they say, your strengths are often your weaknesses too.

To expect any defender at Reading to be faultless is a bit daft.

I would take the money its unfortunate when you lose your place in the first team, but solid and reliable professionals buckle down train, play in the reserves and try to win thier place back, they dont sulk, refuse to play and then act like the mister innocent !

Sonko was a great championship defender, and as such, I think he would have a role next season if he stays. However, I would take 2-3 million on the basis that BK and Cisse both looked like far better in the premiership, and I think will be an immense pairing in the championship, with an aging Doobs and Ivar ready to fill in where appropriate.

Bikey if he stays will be a terrific asset in the Championship. Cisse is another matter. Yes he played well against Man Utd but Villa was awful.
As for Sonko if he goes for £2 million thats decent business. I wouldn''t go for Gabbidon though as he is too injury-prone and has badly lost his way.

Neither of them were as good in the Prem as an in form Sonko was (even though he was prone to the mistake as a few have said above). Can he get back to that level? Does he want to stay and win his place back? Are the rest of the squad happy with him staying after his paddy about playing for the Reserves?

If we need to sell to bring in new faces and freshen the squad up I think we'd take a decent offer offer of £2-3m for him. We've got plenty of centre backs and there are enough doubts over him to suggest that turning down decent money for him would be a mistake.

Course none of them are faultless. The point is how many mistakes can they get away with? Frankly Sonko was a liability most of last season. And as for knuckling down and applying himself, what about refusing to play in the reserves? With that attitude, I'd be very surprised to see him get back.

I'd take the money. We've got enough CBs that will cut it in the Championship, and could use the money elsewhere.

Gabbidon sounds intersting, but unless we sell a number of CBs we don't need him.

If he goes then i'd be sorry to see him go but he's only good in the air. Makes too many fouls when one on one with a striker (although Premiership standard strikers) and can't play with the ball at his feet (ever).

Although i remember against Ipswich (I think), Sonko turned 3 players and ran down the wing. The East stand chanted, "You got done by Sonko..."

I think it is odd that most on this thread seem to say he cant cut it at Prem level, yet it is rumoured that two teams that are now in the Prem now appear to want him, granted they have just gone up though.

My view, Sonko like all our players was on a sharp learning curve, he played in 23 games then got injured in his 24th, in those games we took 34 points, and were as good as safe already.

It is also reported that he got a lot of hate mail from Chelsea fans after the Cudicini incident, not an easy thing to deal with.

He made a mistake going to the ANC as he was not yet fit, anyone who saw his return to the team away to Blackburn could clearly see he was still not fully fit even by then.

Shame that he cannot see that an international career for a lowly World team is not actually going to help his club career, and international breaks with long flights have not helped his return to form or fitness. After moving to France at 6 months I doubt he has that much of a feeling for Senegal anyway, though there will be some pride.

FWIW Sonko has a contract at RFC untill 2010, and will be on good wages despite relegation, we have no need to sell him unless a silly offer comes along.

This is the same 'Superman' that declined a call up for the ANC when we were in the Championship, citing that he'd rather help us get into the Premier League. I believe that's a major reason he's been able to mend his bridges after the recent incident.

I'm not coninced that he'll ever be as good as he was, following the injury, but despite the reserve game incident he may well be able to cut it at CCC level.

However, if someone wants to chuck £2m+ at us, then I'd take it (doesn't mean that SSC will, though)

from new of the world

RANGERS will target Reading rebel Ibrahima Sonko if they lose £10million defender Carlos Cuellar to Tottenham.

The London club have already made a bid for Scotland's player of the year and Rangers know they will have to move fast to replace him.

Middlesbrough and Wigan are both interested in the 27-year-old Sonko, who does not want to play in the Championship next season.
