Totally agree with the second bit.

The first bit is utter bollox though!

I'm fairly certain Influenza (suprising as it may sound) is still the biggest killer, and even in the developing world, Malaria barely makes the top 5 nowadays.

Malaria may not be among the world's biggest killers but it is the single biggest killer of children in Africa accounting for about 20% of all childhood deaths according to UNICEF. It causes over 1 million deaths a year and a child dies of malaria every 3 seconds. That makes it pretty serious in my book. I would not risk being one of the 2,000 Brits who contract malaria every year or one of the 9 who die of it because it's not cool to take prophylactics.

I sincerely hope Emerse Fae recovers quickly and does not suffer any lasting effects.

According to reuters news agency:

1: lower respiratory infection-all the other infections lumped together except TB-
kills 4Million a year
2:HIV-Aids Kills >3 million a year a total of 39.4 people infected world wide
3:Malaria-between 1-5 million Killed per year depending on how wet africa has been
300-800 Million infected each year

4: Diarrhoea kills 2 million a year
5: TB kills 2 million a year-with 8 million new cases annually and a tottal of 2 billion infected
6: Measles kills 1.2 million kids a year from the 30 million infected annually

influenza doesnt even make it into the top 6
HIV is on average the biggest killer
but in bad years malaria still kills more than any other disease
TB is the most infectious

perhaps utter bollocks is a little harsh

BR2 This is a message board mate where occasionally we can escape from the PC Police so if you don't like the heat get out of the kitchen rather than waiting for the Health & Safety officer to turn up.
BTW my dad had bouts of malaria for many years after the War (2nd World war for pedants who don't realise that if people refer to the War they are generally referring to that one)and it meant a few days in bed with the sweats.
If Fae ends up in bed will that be the first time he has broken sweat since signing for Reading?
Another cheap shot?
What is the world coming to?

In what way does this have anything to do with political correctness?!? You sir are an idiot.

It was alluding to vision's post linking Ideal's dad to the SS and then Ideal's rather wimpish response.
You no doubt are in the same wimp club as Ideal.
Kids today tut.

Not really...your own chart says that you were wrong!

I guess it depends how you rate the "biggest killer". In an average year, Flu only kills between 500,000 and 1 milion, but given that pandemics in the last century have killed up to 50 million in any one year, it is still the biggest killer on average - HIV doesn't even come close. I wouldnt be suprised if the WHO groups flu deaths in with lower respiratory tract infections, given that significant numbers of pneumonia cases begin with flu.

I think we're all getting bit carried away.

Several different types of malaria. Falciparum is the (potential) killer, which no doubt most of you are thinking about. Some other sorts are not a problem and as the site says he'll be "back soon".

Sure you'll get well soon, Fae.

Look forward to having you back and pushing for the first team.

Except pneumonia isn't flu is it?
One is bacterial and one is viral.

//Have always been confused by the deaths attributed to HIV/AIDS as technically it doesn't actually kill you. There is a huge overlap of deaths between HIV and TB in Africa. HIV infection leaves you wide open to fatal TB infection. I get the impression that many cases are double counted

Oh and to whover said about how it could have happened..... he was on medication but it isnt always effective

Agreed

I was going to say that I thought AIDS oxf*rd up your imune system which made you more susceptible to infection and less able to fight it. Isn't pneumonia the most common cause of death in AIDS sufferers, in the developed world at least?

Either way, malaria is a pretty vicious disease which will knock Fae sideways physically for a couple of months, I'd have thought. I doubt we'll see him playing again this season. My best wishes to him and hopefully we'll see him making a genuine impact in the Premiership next season.

Pneumonia can be caused by a number of things. Can be viral or bacterial, but can also be caused by physical damage to the chest.

I would think you're probably right about the double counting. That was kinda my point with flu - AIDS can't kill you, it's the secondary infections. Flu can kill you outright but also, to a far less lesser extent, leads you extremely vulnerable.

And the people most afflicted are most vulnerable anyway (i.e. the elderly)

...aside from Spanish pandemic flu that preferentially killed the healthy teenagers/young adults

And yeah, I was generalising with the bacterial pneumonia. Its generally the most fatal and the most common secondary infection after flu. Though having said that I know very little about viral flu!!
