Can anyone confirm how many penalties he has faced in a Reading shirt (excluding shoot outs) and how many of these penalties have been converted / saved and missed ?
Not here to sling mud or anything, just curious.

can't recall him saving one, but then I can't recall a poorly taken one against him and the striker is always favourite with penalties.

The stat alone will be fairly meaningless unless it can be compared to the record of other keepers in the league.

Marcus is a big man, he is not that agile from a standing start, hence IMHO, he decides to go before the ball is kicked, always, this means that all the taker does is take half a stride and he knows which way Marcus is going, then can place it the other way. Looks like what happened yesterday, can anything be done to improve his save ratio?? I guess not or the coaches would have done it.

I wonder whether Marcus is one of those keepers who studies and compiles stats on all of those penalty takers that he is likely to face in the season e.g. their run up, which side of the goal, if any, they favour etc. Doing so can help improve the odds slightly.
I would also like to see him try to do a bit more to influence/put off the taker. IMO psychology can play quite an important part in the process and if any doubt can be put in the mind of the taker or his concentration can be broken and/or he can be distracted, then once again the odds start to improve for the keeper.
Likewise. In most cases our defenders would be much better off letting the player get his shot in because Marcus is far better in those situations than facing penalties.

Royal Rother By the law of averages he is due a helluva run on saving penalties now that's for sure.
So, starting now.....
Unfortunately there is no such thing as the law of averages, if you spin a coin 100 times and it comes up heads a 100 times, the odds are even that it will come up heads again the 101st time. This is why many people lose money backing favourites.

Marcus's record at stopping penalty kicks is appalling. Robert Green at West Ham has saved more penalties this season than Marcus has in his entire career at Reading.
Perhaps some of it is size. I never thought Peter Shilton was particularly good at saving spot kicks and he was a similar stature.
Like many others on here I'm sure I played in goal and to a reasonable standard and I was at least as big as Marcus. I'd chuck myself either one way or the other at the point of contact and short of the ball being played down the middle of the goal (very rare), I stood a 1 in 2 chance of going the right way. After that it's down to the precision and power of the shot as to whether you've got a hope of stopping the ball and you can usually make of good fist of it if you've guessed right. Marcus never seems to get close.
