This is when the thought of relegation became more than jus a worry, but a possibilty for me.

A team that had scraped survival the previous year outplayed the Royals with Jamie Lawrence the playmaker. Jamie oxf*rd Lawrence tearing them apart.

Mark Robins debut, Robert Zabica (by all accounts one of Bradford's worst goalies) a wall in the goal.

97-98 was a very strange season. Reading were hopeless in August - the Bradford result following a particular abject performance against Swindon in the first home game of the season. I can recollect singing "Terry Bullivant is a football genius" during the Bradford game.

September saw an upturn - we even beat Portmouth. Away! Good cup runs in both the League (the defeat to Boro was the turning point in the season. George Cain, grr) while we reached the 5th round for the first time in about 60 years.

We couldn't get a win for love or money in February or March, the former being really frustrating as every team at the time was below us in the table.

Definitely a turbulent season, surely deserved an end of season video???

Not only could we not buy a win, we were getting well and truly stuffed by the teams we played! Port Vale 3-0 defeat, Stockport 5-1 defeat, Bradford 4-1 defeat, Sheff Utd 4-0 defeat, Tranmere 3-1 defeat...we weren't just losing we were being raped!

Would still like to see an end of season vid though!!

Middle part of the season our form was decent and promotion was mentioned after we beat Swindle in Jan! Then total collapse.

Nicky Colgan astonishingly has survived his one-legged goalie act in the Oxford debacle to become an international. They more or less sent us down that night. 10 yrs later we're 4 divisions ahead - I wish I'd know that was coming on my way home from the Manor!

That is the single most memorable game in my Reading-supporting life. Absolutely astonishing in so many ways.
