CAN THE ROYALS ATTRACT PLAYERS

Whatever happens today, it is clear that Reading have achieved so much in the first season of top flight football as sc always says the league doesn't lie...with this in mind we should be able to have a better pick of players in the transfer market than last year (small club going down blah blah blah).
However with Sidwell leaving the club does it not send a message out to potential employees that reading will not and cannot pay the wages that the good players all demand. I'm not having a go at Sidwell leaving but just think that the clubs failure to hang on to the good players may effect future dealings in the market!

If you substituted "Premiership's highest earners" for "good players" then I would agree with you.

And it sounds like a good policy to me. Introducing such wage discrepancy within the team at the moment wouldn't help IMHO.

An important variable to consider is a given guy's age and at the stage at which he stands in his career, of which each man gets but one.

With that said, I don't believe that the Sidwell situation comes as any kind of surprise to any onlooker who may matter, and I suspect that it will have no effect on how attractive a destination this appears to be at this point in time.

Each individual will weigh it on personal and professional merits, same as it ever was and always will be.

We have to find players that fit in with the Reading ethos (no flash cars. no player bigger than the club, attitude like Doyle's/Murty's), and they're difficult to find at this level. However, if anyone can find them, it's Steve Coppell. So we'll have no trouble.

Anyway, how are we supposed to find bargains within the Premiership?

Kevin Doyle and co signing new contracts sends out just as big a signal.

We're a team prepared to give players a chance, blood youngsters etc etc. We're winning praise from the likes of Arsene Wenger for our playing style and we've got a happy working environment... All these things should attract hungry players desperate to play football and/or make a name for themselves.

Sure we won't attract those who are only interested in pound signs, same as we won't hold onto any who are also interested in them. Is that such a problem?

Many international players have hit the headlines with warnings that they have to be playing regular football in order to prove they should be selected for their country.

This is why we may be an attraction over say signing for Liverpool or Chelsea.

Many of whom who shunned our interests last season will be a lot keener this summer, if we're still interested.
Also the fact the stadium is set to be increased will go some way to showing our ambition as a Premiership football club.

Only 1 of the Championship winning team didn't want to re-sign for us, and he's gone to enjoy the delihghts of reserve team football at Chealsea. As you say, that should send out a very positive signal to any would-be signing.

Reading are now an attractive prospect for young, hungry players who see the club as an opportunity to develop. The examples of Doyle, Kitson etc. must give out positive signals.

If Sidwell does join a big club it may be a positive when attracting players. Join Reading and they'll develop you into the kind of player the big teams will want to sign.

I think the case of Hunt is even stronger !

From a nobody, released by a crisis club and about to sign for another on the slide. Coppell steps in and before the ink is dry on the deal Hunt is a Premiership regular and a full international.

There is hope for every journeyman footballer ready to listen, learn and sweat blood !
