Can we field numbers 1 - 11?

When they read out the team last Home game i noticed how close we were to fielding numbers 1-11 on the teamsheet.

It would take injury or suspension for Harper & Ingamarsson for it to happen, but i bet its a very long time since a Prem side has fielded the old fashion shirt numbers line up.

Yes the W Ham game. We came close to fielding 1-11, only Murty didnt feature.

that team line up shown is 1-11.

Not sure what made you lol, its just a boring stat thread.

oh, and you even cant spell the name of our ground correctly. Best alter your location young man.

I noticed this as well. I'd be surprised if ANY premiership team since the start of the century has fielded 1 to 11.

(Murty and Oster didn't start against West Ham - Ingimarsson (16) and Harper (15) were the misfits)

What's the correct formation for allocating numbers 1-11 though?

In 4-4-2 formation I would probably hand out numbers as follows:

....1
.2 5 6 3
7 4 8 11
...9 10

However I'm not sure how 4 got into midfield!

Certain numbers take a different position at certain clubs. I remember Bullivant playing Martin Williams up front with the number 4 shirt!

Ryan Giggs plays 11 on the left wing, but after 1992 Gilkesy played number 7. So the wingers can be swapped, and numbers 4 and 6 can be swapped IMO. Other than that, there are set positions to play.

Leroy Lita in central midfield anyone?

I'd say thats spot on, although 4 and 6 can be swapped if you like, and some might swapped 8 and 10 at times.

It all originates from the old 2-3-5 formation when numbers were first used (I think).

2 and 3 were the full backs

4, 5 and 6 the half backs (5 being the centre half)

7 and 11 the wingers, 8 and 10 the inside forwards (creative attackers if you like) and 9 the centre forward.

I suppose convention, superstition and habit have kept these numbers in regular positions, until squad numbers arrived that is.

Perhaps i can shed some light ...

Back in the olden days (early to mid 70's), Charlie Hurley had the same fixation for 4-3-3 as Sir SC currently does for 4-4-2. In those days the team would line up thus

1
2-5-6-3
7-4-11
8-9-10

The number 4 was generally the holding midfielder who sat in front of the centre-backs 5 & 6. It was a development really of the even older 2-3-5

2-3
4-5-6
7-8-9-10-11

4, 5 and 6 being the half-back line. So 5 and 6 drifted into the back 4, and the wingers 7 & 11 drifted back into midfield to support the number 4.

On occasions numbers 4 and 6 would swap in 4-3-3 but it was pretty much John Hulme in 5 and Tommy Youlden in 6.

We played 2-3-5 at primary school and I was usually one of the 2. Not a happy arrangement, from my point of view.

How old are you?? I feel old that I remember 1-11 and not the squad numbers used these days.
30 and I remember pre-squad number days.... Although guessing which number Adie Williams would wear wasn't always easy as he wore all of them at some point.
