Tommy Youlden's Ears Without wishing to be pedantic, it isn't 'the rumour that never was'.

The rumour exists. Look! It's here. Perhaps the rumoured deal that never was, or the rumoured deal that fell through.

I love that I first posted this just over a week ago, and that the fact that nothing has happened yet apparently means I made it up and it's gone away! How long do some of you guys think it takes to complete such a transaction. It's a bit more complex than popping down to Tesco for six cans of ale.

I have no desire for a Warholian 15 minutes based on made up nonsense. The source is good, the deal was mooted. The buyer may have stepped away, or p'raps Mr Mad did. I don't know whether RFC sought the deal, or whether the buyer did. Anyone who works in business knows more deals dissolve, and dissolve early, than make it to closure. This deal may or may not happen. It may be dead already, it may be trundling along, I have no idea. I heard a rumour, I posted, I am not involved, I probably won't hear more. Enjoy your dismissive answers as you may. But I didn't make it up.

And for those who suggest that JM wouldn't sell. Well, he sold AutoTrader when he felt that the price was right and others could take it further. It's now worth many times what he got for it, but the deal worked for him at the time, and maybe if he'd stayed, it wouldn't have grown as it has. Sometimes a business needs a new owner. I bet he loved Trader too - it made him rich and must have satisfied a deep entrepreneurial need. But it shows that he has form as a 'pass and go' entrepreneur rather than a 'collector of businesses'. In RFC he now has a considerable asset, which is probably close to the top of its value (see endless "we've overachieved" threads). Certainly, for it to rise in value, a new level of investment is required (see 'Why don't we buy more/better players" posts ad nauseum). All that adds up to this being a good time to sell, whatever JMs love for the club. Doesn't mean he will sell, but surely means he'll look around to establish the club's value. He'd be daft not to, and I don't think even his biggest critics here think he's daft.

So cut the sarcasm fellas, you wouldn't want to look mean spirited would you? I'm not trying to con you, wind you up or or self-promote. I ain't no SDR/Thou Voice...it's just a rumour I heard.

What you say makes a lot of sense. As long as it's for the better of Reading Football Club then it's very exciting news if we are 'close' to a take over, but as you say, these negotiations can end as quick as they start and so on, so we'll see, but exciting none the less.

Sorry to rain on your parade but couldnt resist reference to TY goal. Although described in the clubs annals as the goal that never was the goal also existed as the ref gave it despite the fact that it was clear to all on the terraces that it was outside the post and rebounded off the perimeter wall at the Town end.

Tommy Youlden's Ears
North Somerset Royal Tommy Youlden's claim to fame is that he scored the goal that never was. I guess therefore that this is the rumour that never was.

He used to live down my street when I was a nipper. I thought he had big ears. He gave me a signed photo. Soon after I went to a game, and fell for RFC. So it was Tommy's fault (or should that be 'gift'). And I thought he had big ears. Sinister, huh?

I saw him play lots of times and he was a great central defender. However I never saw his ears due to the long hair favoured in the 70's

In interview with JM in todays Daily Mail he says that no offers have been received for the club and that in any event he wil not entertain offers from consortia only from individuals who will agree to JM remaining as club president.

PremAddict Not sure how many of you follow US basketball but an owner the likes of the Dallas Maverick's Mark Cuban would be a hoot.

Obnoxious fratboy crybaby [expletive]wipe, if I'm holding one of the judges' scorecards. A genuinely hateful bucket of filth. Zeus forbid he should come anywhere near.

RUMOUR - Club ownership news

by Tutti Frutti » 09 Apr 2008 08:44

Just picked up this from Tutti's City contacts:

Reading Football Club, the UK-based soccer team, has hired Citigroup to help it find a buyer for the franchise and its stadium, Sports Business Journal reported.

The report cited unnamed sources who said owner John Madejski is seeking up to USD 200m (GBP 108m) for the club and stadium. Citigroup declined comment on whether it is representing Reading. A spokesperson for Reading said Citigroup is one of several parties that the English Premier League team has consulted on a potential sale.

Dan Jones, a Deloitte & Touche partner who tracks the European soccer industry, told Sports Business Journal that Reading will probably be sold to a foreign purchaser. Ten of EPL's 20 teams have been sold within the past five years, and only one team was bought by an English buyer. Jones said EPL teams generally sell for one to two times their previous season's turnover. He said Reading had 2007 revenues of GBP 50m (USD 99.6m).

I don't like the sound of our club being called a franchise.

On the one hand, it fills me with dread, incase it all goes wrong.

On the other, if we want our team to go forward, its a risk worth taking- its the only way!

Ah, yes, they do refer to professional sports clubs as franchises!

However, this also means that if JM is as serious as he sounds about offloading us, he's not going to want to spend a penny in the close season on new players, as he'd want the bank balance to look good to any prospective buyers, shirley?

He wouldn't need to - Coppell has hardly made a dent in the budgets given to him for the last two seasons and this is still available to him.

Not if you listen to some on here. Apparently, for last season we only had a profit of £6m showing on the books. And the TV money for this season hasn't been paid yet apparently.

Well end of the season we'll get the first big slice of tv pie £30m, could easily use £20m or so on the squad and still look very tidy. Whether we will or not is a long and oft repeated debate.

However, virtually every penny of JM's money that has passed through the books has been a loan, so any money spent in the summer (LOL) would be repaid as part of the buyout.
