Cripple Creek One thing you can never accuse Reading of is buying Willy Nilly.
Heard he's going to Sunderland anyway

Admit it, you've been waiting for that. I knew I shouldn't indulge you but couldn't help myself!

Hahnemann's Hairdresser I'd hazard a guess that Coppell is saying this so that teams don't inflate their prices. If we make an enquiry after having said we're desperate for players then teams could inflate their price by £2m knowing full well that we need to get that player. I'd be surprised if he doesn't bring anyone in after having admitted he should have signed a couple of players in the summer.

The problem is that Coppell has admitted that, despite his dead pan 'treat victory and defeat the same' outlook, he can be quite up and down depending on how things go. Although he admitted in the past that he made a mistake not bringing a few extra bodies in over othe summer, he seems to have changed his mind again.

God knows where he stands on it at the moment.

Stranded EP suggests today first signing will be announced this week, though it's a "one for the future" type of signing.

That will be that Baudi bloke then!

North Somerset Royal Statement on OS this morning from SC - seems you are right. Every confidence in present squad, adequate replacements for those going to ANC, club cannot afford exp signings, happy if hr has to run with no signings etc etc

On the upside you could read this to mean "we are negotiating a number of options, however its early days and we need it to be clear that we are happy with our current squad so that other clubs/agents do not sense desperation and put their demands through the roof"

eg Sonko's injury last year - conveniently announced just after the window shut.

An inside source at the club confirmed we will announce Sonko is now officially shite as soon as the transfer window closes.

Coppelled Streets
West Stand Flash If Coppell does not strengthen this month & results do not improve - He can expect to be under serious pressure from the Reading fans.

Simple fact - If COppell doesn't strengthen our side & we go down, he HAS to go.

Why? He wants players, he's said as much back in November that we MUST invest.

It wont be Coppell's fault we don't spend 'big' this month. And why on earth would we sack the best manager in our history and the manager best placed to take us back up?

He said exactly the same in the summer, then held his hands up and admitted he'd made the decision not to sign anyone and that that was a big mistake. He's know been saying how he needs to fix that mistake in January, now though we get to January and suddenly it's like the summer all over again.

Some more transfer talk on the chronic web site:

Coppell is likely to make at least two signings during the month but has already ruled out players from abroad.

One is almost certain to be a central defender with both Ibrahima Sonko and Andre Bikey set to depart for the African Cup of Nations.

The Royals have also been linked with Portsmouth duo Matt Taylor and David Nugent and Bolton's Stelios and all three are struggling for regular games.

Crystal Palace's highly-rated young midfielder, Ben Watson, is another possibility as a long-term replacement for Steve Sidwell.

But Hammond has dismissed rumours of their interest in Cardiff City and Wales winger Joe Ledley. "We're not in the market for a left-sided player," he insisted.

However, Hammond confirmed talks are progressing with their main targets: "In a discreet and professional way we are moving discussions forward with a number of targets," he explained. "We're already involved in conversations with regards to strengthening the squad."

Nothing much new here then although the focus on a new central defender is a relief. Hammond's words look familiar - the standard guff to cover very little activity.

Nobody would be a mighty signing. Don't you know this famous person? He hurt the mighty cyclops by poking out his eye with a heated stick. And cyclops said: "Nobody hurt me....."

looks like a youngster is about to be signed........

http://www.getreading.co.uk/sport/readi ... op?rss=yes

STEVE COPPELL is closing in on his first transfer-window signing, writes NICK IVE.

I understand Royals’ boss is on the verge of landing a young player who it is hoped will be a successful long-term acquisition as opposed to immediately commanding a regular place.

There will be a fee for the player, who Coppell declined to name because the selling club have yet to secure a replacement.

Advertisementyour story continues below
Royals will lose Ibrahima Sonko, Andre Bikey and Emerse Fae on African Cup of Nations duty after Saturday’s FA Cup third-round trip to Spurs, but Royals’ boss is not worried.

He told the Evening Post: “Losing them does not make it imperative that I bring someone in. I would love to bring in Rio Ferdinand, but that’s not going to happen.

“I have every confidence in the players we have. People think you can bring players in during January, who can make a huge difference straight away.

“Any purchases we make will be for the long-term benefit rather than short-term finger-in-the-dyke and we are close to one purchase.â€
