Seal To 100% clarify, England have dropped out of 2022 bid but are still firmly in the bid for 2018.

Reason being that 2018 will definitely go to 'Europe', in which case there's no point going for 2022 as that definitely will not.

All sources pointing to a Russia win for 2018. Unfortunately England just don't play the game with FIFA as well as others. There is also a macro trend of world sports events going to emerging (particularly BRIC) economies, which plays into Russia's hand:-

2008 Olympics Beijing
2010 World Cup South Africa
2010 Commonwealth Games Delhi
2014 Winter Olympics Sochi (Russia)
2014 World Cup Brazil
2016 Olympics Rio
2018....

You get the picture.

Would like Oz to win 2022, but think it will go to US (FIFA will want a big pay day to be guaranteed in the future after taking the tournament to emerging economies).

One of England or US will win for this reason, and I think it will be the US as their bid has less powerful rivals than England's - which apart from Russia is also competing against a strong Spanish / Portuguese bid)

Good call Seal with Russia

1/2 not too bad. But Qatar even astonished me! Apparently all down to power broking between Blatter & Bin Hammam i.e. - you put your presidential ambition on hold and in return I'll support the Qatari bid...

Oh well...Brazil should be great anyway!

Brazil seem to have done very well with the World Cup and Olympic games inside the next 6 years.
The Qatar decision is a shocker. There is no history of football in this country. The temperatures will be sky high and the host nation will get dumped out of the tournament early on.

So at least they'll have one thing in common with the next time we host.

Nice little article from way back in June

http://www.theroar.com.au/2010/06/29/qa ... world-cup/
An informed source has told me that the FIFA president, Joseph S. Blatter, Sepp Blatter to the punters, wants another term as presiding official of world football. But the chairman of the Qatar’s 2022 Bid Commitee, His Excellency Sheik Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has the numbers to prevent this.

A deal will be done to square this circle.

Blatter will get his final term as present. And Qatar will win the hosting rights to the 2022 Football World Cup.

I got accused of sedition by a customer at work a few weeks ago. I found it quite hard not to just laugh at him and say WTF are you on about? I'd just told him he had no right of appeal to his water charges.

Talks of the world cup being played in January and February cos of the temp.

Shocking if they move it - surely they considered the weather before voting?!

Where have you seen this? I can't see that being at all possible with the worlds biggest leagues mid-season and not able to stop what they're doing for a full month, or able to lose key players for that length of time.

Do Germany have a mid-season break? Or don't they suffer the winter enough to warrant that?

If it is played in Jan & Feb then they will have to stop any active leagues in December to give the national teams the four weeks prep required. You'd end up with most national leagues starting mid July and breaking in mid December, and having to restart in March to finish in May. As the leagues are not controlled by FIFA then it could be an interesting debate.

This decision certainly makes it feel like a cash cow. The World Cup is of lesser importance because of tv saturation coverage of the Champions League although it still holds some value and cache.
