Ian Royal Who's talking about 1871 you mentalcase. I specifically said last 30 years. Put down the goalposts.

What are you trying to achieve here with your discretionary 30 year rule?

keeping it relevant to the discussion about how finances have changed in the modern game.

Extended-Phenotype No but whatever we achieved with the billion squidlies would feel less legitimate.

Bollox you'd take every moment and every trophy without a care in the world like every other fan of every other club has done.

Like every fan of every other rich club I'd pretend like it didn't matter but deep down I'd know it did.

Depends on how much we know about what's happening. After being burnt once I'd have some pretty fecking massive reservations. I was worried enough about rumours of Pog being on £60k a week when he signed.

If we stormed the league next season following huge investment from the Thais I'd be happy. If we stormed the league next season with no investment and heavy reliance on the academy, I'd be ecstatic and proud.

You'd have to be an idiot to say it didn't matter.

Do you honestly believe RFC or any other club can get by without investment and rely on kids to win the league?

Fook me I thought this was a serious conversation

Why are the only options spend vastly more than everyone else or nothing?

I'd prefer sustainable sensible investment bringing incremental improvements and culminating in promotion in 2-3 seasons with a mix of academy talent like Dickie, Hector, Stacey and Kuhl alongside some prudent experienced signings who didn't cost the earth.

There not only two options, obvs. Just pointing out that there is by far a bigger sense of achievement if you earn success without just throwing money about.

Can it be done without it, multers asks? I'm glad you acknowledge its harder and therefore agree its more of an achievement.

From Despair To Where? So it would appear that Chelsea are some way behind the likes of Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool and about on par with Villa, Wolves and Forest.

Behind Spurs

Chelsea 22 major trophies
Spurs 14

Yep - When Zingarevich took over RFC all the 'we must do it the Reading way' went all turncoat. Then he fooked off  and now some of them are spitting their dummies out cos 'it's not fair'.

Its not really the point though, m8. Does success feel more legitimate if you earn it rather than pay for it? The answer is obviously yes, I think we all agree.

Playing devil's advocate, doesn't everyone buy it?

In your eyes EP, how does one earn it as opposed to buy it? Reading were historically a 3rd/4th tier club. Haven't they essentially bought it too albeit to a lesser extent....

They would never have got to the chump / PL had JM not put the cash in.

You could argue that Chelsea have done it in a more grotesque way I suppose but that's pretty subjective as well.

No. Someone will always come along and have more money. Look at City. No trophy this year despite breaking FFP. United have spent more than us over two season as have Liverpool. We've won TWO trophies - they've won nowt. Goals of success change when you become more successful.

Remember - There will always be haters.

Shouldn't you be singling out City if you're suggesting it's 'grotesque'? They hadn't won anything in years until the Arab's came along. We were winning trophies prior to Roman taking over. 8)

No - the evidence was on here. It was fine having a 'rich' Russian owner after years of having a 'pop' at Chelsea. People changed their tune.

No I don't think so. I think it's fair to say that Chelsea were the first club in the English game to go down the sugar daddy route / mentalist spending path. I'm not really talking about trophies.

I'm not having a pop it is what it is.

The problem with FFP is it now prevents other clubs from making the same move as Chelsea & City have. By spending more, they've increased their revenue / brand etc which now allows them to spend that bit more under FFP rules.

The gap to the smaller clubs just gets bigger & bigger now. I kind of hope there might be some kind of European super league where all the sugar daddies can fcuk off to & then domestic football might become semi-normal again.

Ok fair point about Blackburn - not sure the level of spending was sustained season after season like it has been at Chelsea though.
