papereyes My thoughts on the micronation issue.

The 11 worst countries in UEFA consist of the least populous nations (every country with a side with a population of less than 1 million (Montenegro, Luxembourg, Malta, Liechtenstein, Faroe Islands, Andorra, San Marino) with two exceptions*; the next most populous country (Estonia) and three countries that lie to the East of the Black Sea (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazachstan)x.

On the basis of this, it seems that one could easily predict the weaker nations. A qualifying tournament could be held in the end of summer/autumn fixture windows or when nations have a friendly window (there's always one about a month into the season) to reduce the current number of 53 countries to a more managable figure such as 45 (9 groups of 5) [so 12 down to 4, for example - 4 groups of 3, winners qualify, hold a semifinal and a final to give them something to fight for#]. Qualification should mean that pre-qualification is not required in the next tournament, so sometimes more established nations might have to qualify.

You can all roll out the WaLOLes jokes at precisely that point.

*Iceland and Cyprus.
xGeorgia is the only other UEFA nation to the East of the Black sea
All three of these countries are in the next 6 of the FIFA rankings system - the bottom 17 nations in UEFA consist of the 10 smallest and 4 of the poorest. :|

#If we were to organise a Thought Tournament, the 12 sides entering would be San Marino, Andorra, Faroe Islands, Liechtenstein, Malta, Azerbaijan, Kazachstan, Armenia, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Estonia, Moldova.

italic - less than 1 million population
bold - east of Black sea
underline - former Soviet state

Include them all, have approx 13 groups of 4 teams where only the winner goes through. Will also reduce the number of fixtures needed so we can all go back to the better days when all internationals were played in midweek and Saturdays were given over to proper football.

I agree getting rid of the some small nations would benefit the competition however I would make it less exclusionary and more inclusionary.. have the top 3 small nations from the tournament go up or sometihng because sometimes these nations do contribute to the competiton..

I do not have a particular interest in going to watch England play. I get a ticket for every home game at the moment through some sponsorship a customer has, I give it to someone else in the office each time.

See above, edited at the same time you posted. Been to see England before, just not bothered about doing it much, usually watch on TV.

I'd gladly take 'em off your (or anyone else's) hands, soggz

Only seven games today, with Sweden needing a win to stay in contention (for second) in Group One and leading Malta at home

Ukraine, also at home, just drew level with Kazakhstan at 1-all

Finland hosting Russia in Group Four, with those two chasing the Germans

Macedonia have beaten visitors Iceland 2-0 in the hunt for second in Group Nine (Scots on level 7 points with both but also own two games in hand on the latter and one on the former)

In the same group, Norway need a win away to the already qualifed Dutch in order to have a realistic shot

Not actually been to the new wembley yet. Just can't be arsed to spend a night talking work with some gimptons while trying to watch a football match then struggling to get home afterwards.

Just been watching the cricket and only now remembered that England are about to play.
Not having missed watching any England game since 1963 I won't spoil the record but I don't have much interest in the game.
BTW if Gary Neville plays what is the point?
Next year for the finals he will be an injury-prone35 year-old so why play him tonight?
With Andorra having no forwards we could easily go with three at the back and so he wouldn't be needed or the alternative could have been SWP at right-back where he has played for City before and would provide the extra attacking option in a game that will be just one-way traffic.
