Terrible decision really, also confused by Senderos not giving away a pen by fouling Adam on the penalty box line, which counts as in the area I believe

The stills of the shot show, IMO, that it was a deserved red. Could've been a leg breaker.

This is what I thought, I saw the still last night on the BBC website.

No matter if you win the ball, two feet should not be in the air, flying into tackles is very dangerous and some many people have been sent off by flying into tackles, people should have learned by now, not to do it. Only got himself to blame IMO.

I see Dalglish has now called for referees to face the media to explain their decisions.

Regardless of last night's "talking point", this is something that I've long thought needs to be brought into the game - if only to temper the utter garbage spouted by pundits (Steve Claridge take note!).

I like Dalglish complaining that Fulham fans were calling Suarez a cheat.

Err, wonder why that was, Kenny?

I always LOL when people say a tackle is a leg breaker.

How many of these leg breakers ever result in a broken leg?

cmonurz File it next to Jack Rodwell's red card. That wasn't a sending off, and nor was this one.

I haven't seen it on video yet, but unless that picture bizarrely misrepresents the tackle then it's a million miles from the Rodwell tackle, which wasn't even a foul. Clear, unambiguous red.

On seeing it initially I didn’t realise Spearing was off the ground with both feet like that, I’d agree that it’s a red in that case – although what the picture doesn’t show is the ball, which is out of shot having been won by Spearing.

Whilst that's true, he did win the ball, the follow up was serious enough to warrant a sending off IMO.

But we've all seen it before. If Dembele's studs had got caught and his leg didn't give way, it would've snapped.

I wonder if Ian RoyaLOL will overturn his opinion on that one.

Proof that pictures can lie (I think - but open to correction). I am sure he won the ball with his right foot and caught Dembele on the follow-though with his left foot, so that straight-legged studs up foot apparently making contact with the ankle did not do so. Not condoning the tackle, but it's not quite as clear-cut as that picture would have you believe.

Not really, it looked borderline and I think there's enough reason to give it. But then I'm hardly the voice of the establishment.

It would only work if the media weren't intent on causing more of an uproar and general shit storm about everything and actually wanted some objectivity and honesty involved.

On the slow motion replays, you can clearly see Dembele's foot twist under Spearings boot just after contact with the ball was made.

Very definitely catches his leg with the foot shown in the picture. That could have been very nasty indeed. I don't care how much of the ball he got first, that's a dangerous tackle and should be a guaranteed instant red.

Spearing is an apt name.
