Franchise FC
Uke "As a young, ambitious manager I wish to move on to further my experiences," he said...

If only we could have managers as loyal as Sparky...

Be careful what you wish for - I expect Fulham to be interested in B-Mac (admittedly amongst others). We could end up with Dave Jones

McD would no way leave us........he is too loyal and loves the club, in a way he feels he has let us all down and wants to put that right.

I can see Fulham getting Martin O'Neill

A. LOL.

Precisely the sort of manager Villa could do with.

Villa's PR department have just left off the last 6 words of the statement which says "We don't want Hughes until his gardening leave is complete"

People going on about loyalty, surely managers will start honouring contracts when chairmen stop sacking them after a slow start to a season

Fulham should have realised by now they're always going to be a stepping stone for young, ambitious players/managers and if they haven't tied him to a long term contract they, nor the idiots on here, can really moan about it

It cuts two ways though, the onus shouldn't be all on one side

And given the money loss involved with poor performances

What other reason than cash will Hughes be going to Villa for? History? His Birmingham roots?

It's a double-edged sword - a long term contract increases the pay-off when they sack him.

Well, history, yes. Villa have it, Fulham less-so.

It's one of those intangibles in football. Liverpool haven't one a title for 20 years, but there are players who would give their right arm to play for the club, Torres absorbed the club's history when he joined, the Kop, the European Cups, the legendary players. How many years do they need to be title-less before that fades? Probably 40 or 50? Maybe not ever.

Villa are a 'bigger club', with loftier goals than Fulham, so it's a natural step in Hughes' career. I personally rate him very highly, if Ferguson hangs on long enough, Hughes might even be United's next boss.

Perceptions can be strange!

Fulham

Villa

Looks like most Villa glory days were over a century ago!

Blimey! I guess there's a perception of Villa being one of England's 'big clubs' on the back of their success in the early 80s, the tail-end of huge British success in Europe. Had no idea it was one title in 110 years though!

Still one more than Fulham at that level - not much more, I agree, but they've also won one more European Cup. They would probably rank as 'bigger'.

Look at the resources though.

Villa have a stadium and a fan base that dwarfs Fulham's so, like being at Newcastle, if you turn them into a success then you can take them a lot further than Fulham and stand a better chance of winning things.

I think Hughes is an excellent manager. Saying he hasn't won anything is a little daft as he's not really had a lot of chance to win things with Wales, Blackburn, briefly with City, and then Fulham.

He was doing ok at City before they dumped him and then threw even more money at it and still didn't do a hell of a lot better.

Would Chelsea really go for Mark Hughes? That would be the funniest appointment of them all. Thing is, the only loyalty in football is from the supporters. I can't blame a manager or player wanting to move on to bigger and better things. If the opportunity came to any of us to advance our careers I would say the vast majority would jump at the chance. All I can hope for is that shit like badge kissing, stating ambition and spouting forth about how wonderful everything is would just stop.

If its a one year contract, what are you all on about him being disloyal for? Surely Fulham would have offered him a longer contract. Are clubs unloyal for releasing players when their contracts are out? How mean of them, hope all the clubs fail.

It was not a one year contract

It was a two year contract, with an option to quit at one year

Hughes signed up for two years, why did he quit except for more cash or having been tapped up? Its not like Fulham weren't prepared to honour their second year or even renegotiate.

Uke
Hughes signed up for two years

That's not true. He signed up to a contract which he was only obliged to perform for one year.
