What are your reasons for this? (too many games, should just be league champions, whatevs)

I thought the European Super League idea had been rejected but it seems to be making a comeback to include as many as possible to really get more support. No doubt it’ll mean games starting June to complete all the knockout rounds required

The clue is in the name. It totally makes a mockery of qualification for the thing, what’s the point if almost half the top division gets a crack at the CL every year (presumably the same increase in chances will go to all the usual suspects - Germany, Spain, Italy, France etc.) The competition should be something special, it’s bad enough with 4 places, but no they must keep the so called big leagues as happy as possible by throwing even more money for their clubs to waste on even more foreign talent and get themselves into even more of a financial mess. What about actually giving the smaller nations champion clubs a place in the main tournament rather all the big league “failures”?

God, ManU might even get back in the competition at this rate.

How have we come to 7?

4 qualifiers
Champions League Winners
Europa League winners
UEFA co-efficient.??

Wouldn't that need the Champions League winners to not finish in the Top 5.

Liverpool and Arsenal look good for top 4, City looking more comfortable. so would it need Villa to win the CL?

I would laugh if Spurs qualified for the CL through the Europa and got relegated.

Bournemouth in the Champions League via the co-efficient?

Pretty much that yeah.

Right now the PL is currently looking good for a 5th qualifying place to be awarded for next season.

If Spurs or Man Utd win the Europa League then they are also in next seasons CL.

To get a 7th it would then need someone finishing outside the top 5 to win the CL this season. Aston Villa would be pretty unlikely, but it's not out of the question that Man City win the CL but finish lower than 5th.

If it happened it would also mean half the PL would be playing in Europe next season. RIP Saturday 3pm

2 Italian teams going out tonight helps the Premier League even further with getting that 5th Champions League spot. It's really very likely now.

La Liga right now looking most likely to be the other League to get an extra spot

Really hoping that we see Forest and one other not called Chelsea, amongst our five. Liverpool, Arsenal, and I'd suggest City now, all locked in.

Makes it harder for the comedy of elite clubs missing out. Really want City to totally collapse now but they won’t. Have to hope Chelsea disappear without trace from the top 5 instead.

“Being singled out in the manner I have been not only hurts but feels deeply disrespectful, not least because of the immense hard work and commitment I have always put in each and every day to help bring success to this club and to the incredible fans of Bergamo.

Ademola Lookman publicly to his boss after Piero Gasperini called him 'one of the worst penalty takers I have ever seen', following his miss against Club Brugge.

Can understand the manager's frustration if Retegui normally takes them. Do wonder though if he could cut a player some slack who had already pulled a goal back in the game, and won Atalanta the Europa League last season.

Next draw is tomorrow

Liverpool Vs Benfica or PSG
Arsenal Vs PSV or Feyenoord
Villa Vs Dortmund or Club Brugge

PSG could be a real danger to Liverpool. Dembele looks like a player reborn, and Kvararatskhelia has just joined and is always a threat

Villa v Dortmund would be a decent tie.

Dortmund having a very poor season in the league. Villa would have a chance of getting through that

The paths are already drawn too.

Liverpool would face one of Lille, Villa, Dortmund or Brugge in the QFs, if they win their R16 tie.
For Arsenal it is Real, Atletico, Bayern or Leverkusen. They got the shitty side of the draw. Liverpool can't play any of those sides, or Inter, until the semi-finals.

Once the R16 draw is complete, clubs will known their entire 'path to the final'.

For some reason I've watched a lot of Bodo/Glimt this season. They've looked really good, especially when they beat Porto with 10 men. Hope they can make it through today.
