Row Z Royal Do Germany have a mid-season break? Or don't they suffer the winter enough to warrant that?

German winters are generally snowier than those here. The 1. BL break got reduced last year, so now is from mid December to mid January. I think England's fairly unique in not having a winter break. I'm expecting that to change in the near future.

In the 2021/22 season, probably.

Good article in the Guardian on this, actually. Doesn't address the logistical concerns, but exposes the lazy generalizations about people being executed and such. Nice point on Qatar being less corrupt than UK, too. Also, on the social justice aspect, there's a fair point made in the comments section - when England hosted a World Cup, being gay was illegal here. Why should that necessarily be a reason not to hold a sports tournament?

Having said that, I still would like to see Israel qualify, and the entire team to come out on the eve of the competition.

all the stadia will be purpose built and air conditioned.

You haven't addressed his point about there being no history of football in that country.

Then again, what history is there in Aldershit?

Just because a country has a small population and so the quality of their national team means they don't get to world cups doesn't mean there isn't a history of football there. People in the Middle East in general are f**king nuts about football.

i have no need to "address" either of those issues. the fifa world cup is a cash cow,and will take the circus to whoever provides the most beneficial tent.

I really couldn't care at all about their lack of history. I'm not even bothered by the world cup moving to January. It's the logistics of hosting an entire world cup in one city that's nuts.

I'm in two minds about changing the date when the Finals are played in Qatar. January is pretty dismal and something like the World Cup would at least give us something to look forward to.
I think Qatar is a huge error particularly as one of the enjoyable features of any World Cup is the passionate nature of the host nations own support...that would be missing in Qatar.

A report I heard yesterday suggests that over the next 12 years Qatar will spend something like $50.1B dollars on this - that's an absolutely phenomenal sum.

For instance, it won't be a one-city tournament, as they're going to build a whole new city around some of the new stadia.

So they're throwing absolutely vast sums of money at this.

Just as a side-note, why are people so upset that FIFA has sold football out to the highest bidders, in the form of Russians and Arabs.

Isn't that exactly what the FA has allowed to happen to our domestic game without a whimper of protest?

Couldn't give a sh*t if they move it to January. Football leagues around Europe will find a way of coping, the world will continue turning.

but surely the country should fit around the WC, not the WC around the country?.......if its going to be 100+ then they should build the stadiums under cover with air-con making it cooler!?

I thought that was part of the proposal i.e. air conditioned indoor stadia.

Yep - see the very first post in this thread, from April. They'll be solar powered, too - to appease the environmentalists.
