After the revelations in todays Sunday Times, any country that has enough cash to bribe the FIFA delegates of countries such as Nigeria will win the bid to host the World Cup.

Lets face it, the chances of us winning the World Cup bid on the grounds of history, ground infrastructure, transportation links, "buggins turn" and any other reason you would care to name are massive and far outweigh the alternatives for 2018.

However, we all know that the above reasons have Oxf*rd all to do with who gets the nod; its all about political and financial influence; as long as Jack Warner in the West Indies is still alive (that guy is so balanced - chips on BOTH shoulders), and as long as corrupt politicians masquerading as FIFA delegates are still in place, we haven't a snowball in hell's chance of getting the World Cup.

In fact, Quatar have more chance of winning in 2022 then we have in 2018.

It does feel like countries such as Qatar are just buying into football culture in their bid to host the world cup. At least even Russia is a genuine footballing nation who is bidding because presumably their people would enjoy it; Qatar is just trying to increase it's status against places like Dubai.

According to the BBC England's bid has been "criticised" for the "training camps, hotels, govt guarantees".....

Hm...only "breaking news" but doesn't sound too positive.

It is a ****ing disgrace that Russia will get the World Cup....the whole thing has been a sham from start to finish. The Times will get blamed but I don't know why. FIFA is so corrupt and we clearly haven't played that game and look where it has got us. Hotels, Training.....what a load of bollox!! In April this year Blatter said that if SA 2010 couldn't go ahead, England could easily host the WC at short notice!! What a pile of oxford!!

Thing is Russia should IMO get to host the World Cup. They haven't done so before. Its surely about time.

Why - that is no argument whatsoever? There are nearly 200 countries and only a handful (18?) have hosted the WC!

Russia is not suited to host a multiple location sporting event because it does not have the transport infrastructure to cope. It does not have the stadiums to host the event and these would become white elephants if built. Beyond Moscow and St Petersburg, there are not adequate hotels for the expected number of visitors and if these were built, again they would not have a sustainable future. How many visitors are remote Russian cities likely to get!

Russia is much better suited to a single venue event like the Olympics or winter Olympics, which they are hosting in 2014 and will probably do very well.

Bizarre, I haven't read the story, but how on earth can our bid fall short on facilities, particularly hotels, catering etc?

Was in Qatar a few weeks ago.

It's far too hot to play football. That is all.

BBC report:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/9203378.stm

Fifa executive committee members Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii have been banned from voting in the 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosting ballot.

Adamu was banned from football activity for three years and Temarii for one year over claims they asked for money in exchange for World Cup votes.

Seal To 100% clarify, England have dropped out of 2022 bid but are still firmly in the bid for 2018.

Reason being that 2018 will definitely go to 'Europe', in which case there's no point going for 2022 as that definitely will not.

All sources pointing to a Russia win for 2018. Unfortunately England just don't play the game with FIFA as well as others. There is also a macro trend of world sports events going to emerging (particularly BRIC) economies, which plays into Russia's hand:-

2008 Olympics Beijing
2010 World Cup South Africa
2010 Commonwealth Games Delhi
2014 Winter Olympics Sochi (Russia)
2014 World Cup Brazil
2016 Olympics Rio
2018....

You get the picture.

Would like Oz to win 2022, but think it will go to US (FIFA will want a big pay day to be guaranteed in the future after taking the tournament to emerging economies).

One of England or US will win for this reason, and I think it will be the US as their bid has less powerful rivals than England's - which apart from Russia is also competing against a strong Spanish / Portuguese bid)

Good call Seal with Russia
