Hoop Blah Not too many surprises there.

Berahino, Chambers, Stones and Oxlade-Chamberlain (injured again?) not in but possibly dropping down to the U21s for the first 3. Walcott strolling straight back in might be seen as a bit of a surprise perhaps.

Interesting that he's included 3 left backs. Suggests he's struggling to decide on the pecking order on that spot.

i'd say Baines was pretty much his 1st choice to be honest but he's barely kicked a ball in the last few months so probably wants to see where he's at.

Surpised Stones hasn't been included as he seems to have settled back well for Everton since his return from injury although as you say he may be earmarked for the Under 21's.

genome And Barkley. I've barely heard his name all season.

I think he's had a bit of a tough time of it this season but Hodgson is rightly (within reason) sticking by those players who are likely to be in his plans long term and are part of the team he's trying to develop.

If we want England to play as a team you can't just chop and change the side every set of fixtures depending on who's the latest flavour of the month or who's had a bit of a dip in form.

About as good a squad as he could pick.

Still looks a depressingly long way off a good International side though. The defence is of course the weakest part of the squad which doesn't appear to have too many class choices. Have been impressed with Walker from Spurs this season....he's quick, strong and has enough presence to be in the team, always have that fear that he's prone to a shocker mind you.

Sterling, Henderson, Rooney, Sturridge et al................same old same old, good Premier league players but mediocre International ones.

These are potentially very good international players, apart from Henderson of course, but we have a spectacularly bad manager. Look at the squads still in the World Cup once we had gone out, and there weren't many that could match our strength.

Sadly they were all better at stuff like passing, shooting, control, tackling etc etc

With a bit of organisation and a manager who didn't let Stevie G repeatedly twat 50-yard killer passes into touch we would have been fine.

Yep. Barkley looks like another world class youngster who's actually not world class after all.

He and Wilshere have been screwed by injuries haven't they. Barkley is still young enough that this could just be a set back season though right, and Everton have been pretty toss all round haven't they?

I'm delighted Everton are doing badly as I dont particularly like the way a number of fans treated Moyes when he left. Like he was some kind of moron that knew nothing about football.

He hasn't kicked on this season but there's every chance he will still come good.

Obviously our media love to overhype these kids as they burst onto the scene but Barkley has just that bit of x-factor that we don't produce enough of. That flair and creativity is, almost by definition, going to be inconsistent and take longer to develop and make the most of so lets give the kid a break and remember that he's only just turned 21 and hasn't yet played 100 games.

Squad looks a little different now with a few drop outs and replacements called up.

Out go Sturridge, Shaw, Forster and Lallana and in come Rose, Mason, Butland and Green.

It'll be interesting to see if Hodgson gives Kane his debut in the qualifier against Lithuania or sticks with Welbeck to partner Rooney. The other alternative might be to play Rooney up top with Barkley in behind. It seems a perfect opportunity to give Kane a chance though.

Still officially unconvinced by Kane.

nothing against Kane himself, I just assume he is the next in a long line of players who happen to have a good run of form at a young age and so the media proclaim them as our next big hope (Berahino anyone?).

hope I am wrong but right now I fully expect Kane to start off slowly next season, never get back to the goalscoring numbers we have seen this season, pundits to claim he is no longer an unknown quantity (as if when a new footballer comes along all opposition players are bamboozled into knowing how on earth they should respond) and in about 3 years time he will be at Sunderland scoring 10 goals a season.

I'd expect so, but the be fair it is 10 or 11 days away which for little niggles is fine.

I'm not one for standing up for players withdrawing from international squads but I can understand them being very careful with Sturridge and I think he was assessed by the England teams medical staff to see what they thought. There's no point messing him up again when he's obviously a bit fragile.
