I've always quite liked him but Downing is 30 years old and has shown throughout almost the entirety of the last 10 years that he doesn't quite have the extra-added required to make a go of it at a top club or international level.

Those who think that has suddenly changed because he's hit a bit of form for West Ham need to have a little rethink.

I'd probably agree with that RR, but if Hodgson wants to bring in an extra player for cover for whatever reasons then Downing is probably a reasonable choice.

He isn't likely to be going to Euro's in two years time so it's a bit of an odd selection but who would he take instead for this get together? Ravel Morrison? Zaha?

The one who missed out, who is possibly in the same boat in terms of that extra quality and involvement at the Euro's is Shelvey and Hodgson has looked at him recently anyway.

He's injured at the moment isn't he? (Didn't play for Swansea yesterday anyway.)

Whatevs
TBM
Whatevs Since he's been gone they've not really had anyone with explosive pace.

You mean apart from Welbeck , Sanchez and Ox?

Did consider those but they just don't have the blistering pace that Walcott has

Heard the other day that Phil Jagielka was clocked as the fastest player in the league this season

Yeah and although this is surprising, you do run faster without the ball than with it - so he was probably chasing a forward (who had the ball) back over a long distance

Even with that in mind, I wouldn't have had him down as a speedster!

appreciated but it's more about acceleration than top speed. Jagielka is the quickest in the prem according to top speed

Dunno lol, maybe Walcott just looks faster

EDIT: yeah, just saw the other posts

Don't the quick forwards make runs without the ball then?

That does sound like a remarkable stat if true.

Not really, over a large distance, it's more 10-20 yard sprints off the ball which they then either reach the ball or the area, either way they slow down rather than speeding up like a chasing defender would.

Would tend to agree with Ryan Bertrand that he has been unlucky not to have made the squad for these games, in light of his form, and the patchy form of Luke Shaw. Brought into focus by Baines' injury which leaves Kieran Gibbs as the only fit left-back available.

Shaw has been playing pretty well for United in the last couple of games tbf

As a welsher I wanted to wish England good luck tonight against those cheating b+stards. 78 and 85 with that pathetic dive to get to Mexico in the playoff will linger in my memory forever.

He played well for England as well. Bertrand seems a long way down the pecking order now.

Have to admit I quite enjoyed last night's England game, maybe as (not unsurprisingly) it had more of the pace/style/aggression of an English league game. Clyne looks decent in his first two games as well.

We were pretty comfortable against a weary looking Scotland following their physically draining game with the Irish.

Was disappointed with how little threat they carried coming forward, the jocks were missing a big man up top who could hold it and give the hard working and busy Naismith something to feed off. England played some good stuff at times, Wilshere is our best midfield player while I'm not sure England are a worse team without Henderson - still not convinced that he's remotely good enough to be an International player.

Good to see England are working on the obvious weakness of our defense by changing things around selection/player wise. I guess they're hoping that one of the combinations will click enough for us to have a reasonably dependable line up come the start of some proper tournament football.
